Realistically, I think Illinois is better for me though. The Chicago area offers a lot of job opportunities that are not there to the same extent in MI.

Southeast Michigan has more job opportunities for engineers than probably anywhere else in the country.

Depends on what you are looking for in an area. I live on a lake in a Detroit suburb. I couldn't do that in Chicagoland.

The Northewestern suburbs and continuing onwards to the WI/IL border are full of lakes.

Too crowded. You have to know the right spots to vacation in those states that aren't full of urbanites.

Seems to me Illinois is winning this poll by a similar margin to its population advantage over Michigan. When everyone is hometown voting here its clear Illinois will win with 3 million extra people than Michigan has. This poll would only be valid if only people who do not live in either state voted in it.

How do you know many of the votes weren't from those who don't live in either state?

I think Michigan easily beats Illinois for natural beauty, although I think Illinois has some very nice areas. I know when we vacation in Southwest Michigan it's full of Chicago folks, so that must say something.
