NYC has pockets of Ghanaians (in the Bronx), West Indians to include Jamaicans, Trinis, and Haitians (in certain enclaves in Brooklyn/Queens), and Senegalese (in Harlem).
Note, for West Indians, this demographic is a bit trickier as they tend to intermarry with African Americans more than Africans do in my experience. Thus, you have more mixing between these groups, which may change things for some people as far as this conversation goes.
While NYC has a huge African-American population he West Indian population feels more culturally imposing. It seems like you'll find many more Jamaican restaurants than Soul Food restaurants in most of the city's black neighborhoods.
Yeah; I think 300,000 is too high, but Houston is a popular destination in Nigeria. Anyways, I last heard the population was 100,000+
Seriously, Texas as a whole has an incredibly large amount of Nigerians; I grew up in Waco and we had a decent sized population of Nigerians and Ethiopians.
I can confirm that I know (American-born) people with West African immigrant parents who live in Houston and Dallas.
NYC is a bit hairy because so many African Americans (decendent of Slaves) left the city in the past few decades with that said AA culture is still prominent in the city. Many Blacks in NYC indenitfy with American Black culture as opposed to foreign Black culture.

Ditto for New England. Especially Rhode Island...little to no AfAm population in RI, maybe 1-2% of the entire state is black descendant from US Slaves. Only notable black folks I could think fo who fit that description from RI are Ed Cooley(Providence mens basketball coach) and Viola Davis.
The Upper North, NY NJ NE...anything 'New' has been seeing a steady shift in its black population from American to West Indian for 40 years.

Culture seems to drop significantly north of the NYC tri-state area. In the mid-Atlantic AA culture is strong but declining with NY and NJ while PA and DE have seen a big pull from NYC and Philly.

AA culture is still strong north of the NYC area, it just depends on where and to what degree. Actually within NY State north of NYC, the black population is largely AA(with some immigrants/refugees thrown in). Most of it is directly from migration from the South, but some have roots going back well over a century(if not centuries) and some have come up from NYC/bigger Northeastern or even Midwestern cities(Philly, Chicago, Detroit, Newark, Boston, etc.).
For instance, many may not know that Rochester NY at about 41% Black is one of the major Northeastern cities with one of the highest percentages in the region and bigger Upstate NY cities are in the 30 to low 40’s % range. Some smaller cities like Niagara Falls, Schenectady, Poughkeepsie, Newburgh, Middletown, Troy, Utica, Binghamton, Kingston, Hudson, Elmira, Beacon and Geneva are in the 13-33% black range.
Another example is that Buffalo and Utica have radio stations owned and operated by AA women, while Rochester’s arguably most listened to radio station(WDKX) is also black owned and Binghamton has a station owned by its Urban League chapter. Rochester, Buffalo and Ithaca have mayors that are black. Many school superintendents currently or in recent years have been black as well, including districts like Ithaca, Brockport and Wayne Central. So, basically I’m trying to say that the influence may be bigger than what people know.
I believe CT is as well, but with more of a Caribbean influence in comparison.
