When I was looking to sublet my condo in downtown West Palm, I dealt with a young woman who was coming down from up North to do her residency in Palm Beach County. She contacted me about my place, which I had listed on Craigslist, and came to visit the area herself. She was concerned because she had read on the internet about how awful it was. Crime everywhere, etc. etc. She ended up subletting my place from me and has now lived in downtown West Palm for about 6 months, through the hottest summer months and now the pleasant winter. She loves it, and wants to live permanently in Florida now if she can find a job in her field. She loves the beauty of the place, and the lifestyle. She may even be moving FURTHER South, which of course is in contrast to the "Don't go south of PGA Blvd." people.

Malcontented and miserable people want everyone to be miserable like them. People who live in the ghetto want to think everyone else will have the same experiences as them. It's wrong, of course, but when researching from afar, you have no way of knowing any better.
Maybe we should start our own forum, I don't know. I say that as the #1 malcontent. Although there are more people than you may realize. Some are probably too afraid to post, but they email me privately and recommend a number of my posts.

I suppose I am in a very unique position in that I lived here before, left for 30 years, and because of circumstances (husband's job), had to move back when I never in my wildest dreams thought I would ever return. But anyway, everybody here knows my story. There are others though, who feel the same way I do. I found it very comforting to know, in past threads, that they cope in the same manner I do. People cannot just up and leave whenever they want to, especially in today's economy. If you have a job, ANYWHERE, your best option is to just stay put, at least until the whole country's economy improves. When you are over 50 years old, jobs are hard to come by even more so and especially here.

As so many people have said, do your research. Florida isn't vacation or Disney. You must like summer weather, year round. Know that South Florida is a LOT hotter than North Florida. That was my mistake having lived in North Florida, not even liking that, and finding out that the south was even more extreme.

If you are not retiring, the job situation is crucial. The entire country is in a recesssion, Florida maybe even more so because of the housing crash and fewer industries. If you already have a job where you are, unless you are getting a transfer, be aware that you just might be better off waiting. Yes, 9 times out of 10, you will be paid less than where you came from. Some costs may be cheaper, but others may be more. If you have a young family, can you swing a cut in salary?

You cannot move here stary eyed. Keep both feet on the ground. If you have any doubts at all, WAIT. There is always "tomorrow".

Just my 2 cents.

Well, let's get back on topic of NY'ers feeling homesick.

For the record, Mods do not play favorites and take their jobs seriously. We mainly insure ALL posts, positive and negative, comply with the Terms of Service.

As with all great topics, there are different points of view. as long as a post complies with the TOS, it is welcomed.

Now, back to topic......

What Bridgeport was getting, that was about what I would get.

My daughter said her fiance in West Islip got snow but it then rained for about 5 hours. I guess most of it melted then.
We're originally from Port Jefferson and you are so right! We used to listen to the weather report from Bridgeport too. I remember once we were having a party at Theatre Three and there was a huge snowstorm. When I called the theatre they told me they never close for snow. Needless to say, 30 minutes later I got a phone call telling me that I needed to reschedule the party to the following weekend. I really am not missing the snow and ice at all!

Well, it's late Christmas Eve and I had a very busy day of baking and cooking. I will have another busy day tomorrow of cooking. Both my daughters are here; my older daughter who moved in with us, and my younger daughter who came down for Christmas. I am feeling very, very homesick tonight. I go through all the Christmas preparations here with both my daughters now, but it is just not the same. I told my younger daughter this and she just said, yeah, I know. My older daughter, who has been here 3 weeks, said anytime I want to move back, she will come with me. As my younger daughter says, "This place isn't for me." I agree and now my older daughter says it too.

I know I should be happy just to be with them, and I am. But I just want to go home, even if it is going to be 50 degrees and raining on Christmas in NY. I want that more than this 80 degrees and blazing sun, palm trees, and green, green, green.

Yes, I am very, very homesick tonight.

TANaples,
Is there any way you can do that? Life is too short to be that unhappy.
If your kids want to be up in NY also, it seems that there must be a way.
Without being too personal, what is holding you back? Perhaps we can figure out a way......

merry Christmas everyone !........as far as home sick I don't miss -2 degrees with a wind chill of -19, blowing and drifting snow.
I will suffer with the low 80's and sunny weather.
I am a snow bird so I will be returning in late march......hopefully after winter weather but it isn't ever a sure thing!

right now on LI. I certainly would not have to blast away the AC in order to keep the oven running for 5 hours. Actually, I would probably even turn off the heat with all the cooking being done and temps that high today.

Oh, well. Merry Christmas. Everybody in the POOL after dinner. NOT.
