I'm curious as to how many feminists urged women to throw away their stilettos in addition to burning their bras during the era of Second Wave Feminism?

I've nothing against women wearing them if they want to, although if I were a woman I doubt I would, but I do find it strange how some view them as 'empowering' while others see them more akin to foot-binding. The fact is that they certain DO have a lot with making women more attractive to men (as most fashion does), and although you might not feel that way about it, that's the whole point of high heels, to make the female figure more alluring to men. They weren't designed for practicality, but to make women walk a certain way. Demure ideals about what was 'ladylike' (again the comparison to foot-binding). That's as far as aesthetics goes. Of course women raised on a diet of barbie dolls and what not will think it's just part and parcel of being feminine. Again, that's fine, but men and women have been conditioned into viewing them as indispensable to feminine beauty.

Do you have some data to support what you are saying? What sizes are you talking about?

My grandma was short and sometimes a bit chunky....she generally wore a size 5 shoe...not too easy to find,
because it was at the smaller end of commercially available shoes.

A taller slender woman could be at the opposite end of the size range.

If you do a bit of googling, you can find websites that sell heels designed to fit the largest of feet...I'm guessing they are actually selling to men?

Wearing heels once in a while and minimizing walking in them by carrying a designated pair of flats is the way to go if one wishes to preserve her health and overall appearance.
For some it really doesn't take too many years of consistent heel wearing to have bunions or deformed toes. My sister is already having some problems with her feet.

Btw, I was never into heels since I am tall (5'10"). When at work, I wear the average pump and dressy flat type shoes. And I think (some) women wear the heels not for empowerment but because they are short. Very short, compared to my height. Oh, also...please forgive me that I wear a size 11. Thanks.

Wow, all that analyzing about why women wear heels (attractive to men) or don't wear heels (refuse to pander to men). I wore heels because I happen to like them. I like the look of them, I like the look of them on me, I like me in them. The super-high platforms of today's style don't appeal to me because they remind me of the "special" shoes that two of my childhood friends had to wear - too big and clunky. But wear 'em if you got 'em.

As far as "kid, you'll ruin your feet", I wish I could telll you how ruined my feet are NOT. If you wear shoes that fit properly and know how to walk in them, you won't necessarily ruin your feet or anything else. My grandmother had the world's worst feet and she never wore anything except bedroom slippers and old lady Cuban heel oxfords.

All of the above is, of course, my own opinion based on my own experience. YMMV

You are right that not wearing heels doesn't make you immune to foot problems. The mechanics of wearing heels though does predispose one to certain problems, like bunions.

I'm an Alabama fan and some people who hate Nick Saban like to make fun of the fact that he is short. They would particularly point out a screen shot of him standing next to a female sideline reporter who was taller them him whom I THINK was wearing heels (never mind the fact that she's taller then some other coaches too). The thought crossed my mind that it was silly for this woman to be wearing heels on a football field sideline but if a tall woman gets her kicks, feels empowered, is just innocently enjoying fashion whatever - I still think we all have to be mindful of our surroundings and dress for the occasion. There's a time and a place for everything. I guess it falls into fake contact, waayyy too padded bra, and spanx category.
I'm 6'1 barefoot so I'm taller than most people regardless of what I'm wearing. So I've always figured adding a few moreinches isnt going to hurt considering 99% of men are going to write me off even when I'm wearing flats.

Making fun of short guys isnt funny or cool though. Making people feel insecure about something they have no control over isnt funny. Just an fyi.

I don't like the look of high heels myself, but women that I am with feel obligated to wear them because I am 6'4 and they don't want to feel like midgets.

I wouldn't say that heels make a woman unattractive, but I do tend to find myself more attracted to women who wear functional shoes, minimal makeup, and less flashy clothes. I guess I am a little self conscious ever since I dated a girl that liked to get really dressed up and my best friend thought she was an escort.

What do you think?
I think you are a very unusual person...
Women look WAY better in heels. WAY better.

However, I am willing to bet that you like women with small butts and are not partial to taller women, am I right? Heels make their butts look rounder and fuller, and many white guys are not fans of bigger or rounder butts.

I'm a huge fan of women in heels and most men agree, hence the whole "stripper heel" thing. There's a reason why every stripper in the world wears 6"+ platforms, they make them look better.
