im 40, married, straight, and i dont give a crap about style. i wear flip flops. Theyre very comfortable, easy to slip on and off and last a lot longer than slippers. I only wear them around the house though. i dont go to the mall or anywhere wearing them.
I don't have a problem with flip flops on men if they don't have gnarly feet. But sandals/mandals, especially those with the two velcro straps across the top of the foot and any Birkenstocks should be banned for both sexes. Fugly fugly fugly!
Men have been wearing sandals since Roman days. Probably before that. They are still popular as long as they don't wear them with socks. That's a no-no. There has to be some fashion sense.
The look has been so much more popular in recent years and from a purely aesthetic standpoint to me they are kind of trashy looking and I have to agree with the previous comments about flip flops not being very comfortable (nor good for your feet) or attractive (especially on men).
BUT...It seems to me that men should have just as much right to wear them as ladies, and the comments about them being effeminate are silly.
Guys are so limited and narrowed in what can be worn already compared to women without further restricting sandals and flip flops (though I don't care for the look myself). It's a pretty common occurrence for women to be able to wear loose fitting dresses or shorts and sandals in a professional work environment, while it's not uncommon for men to be chastised for wearing even comfortable clothes (such as short sleeve shirts instead of heavily starched long sleeve ones) in 90 degree + heat, let alone the flip flops or shorts. There's no real logic to it; it's just what's been engrained into the culture and programmed into people for so long, but there's not much of a reasonable basis for the double standard.
So.... I don't mean to make this into a gender debate, but the double standard in footwear (and fashion in general) has been a longstanding pet peeve of mine.
we have a chick here in the office that wears flip flops every day, I don't think it really is appropriate for an office worker to wear them, I really don't.

now if a man wore them, OMG.
i can see an office worker wearing flip flops more than i can see a construction worker wearing them. Youre sitting in a cubicle all day. Who cares what you have on your feet?
