Until 5-10 years ago, it was rare to see a guy wearing flip flops (or even sandals) in public in the midwest but they've really grown in popularity in recent years

It seems that a lot of women are encouraging guys to switch to open shoes. During the summer and even into the fall, I've noticed a lot of younger couples (and even older ones) where both the guy and girl are wearing flip flops or sandals when out and about. I went to a shoe store earlier this summer and overheard a few women trying to get their husbands or boyfriends to buy then. Even had a couple of female friends convince me to buy some.

I think it's great that women are encouraging this trend and breaking the perception that sandals are girly shoes. Do you all think that this is just a fad or are flip flops and sandals here to stay? Have any of you ladies convinced your SO to make the switch?

Must be a regional thing. Around here they have skyrocketed in popularity over the last 5-10 years.

I think the OP is talking about more than just flip flops and shorts while at the park, a picnic, or the pool. I see guys whering flip flops with jeans, which I think is a fad. Mind you, I live in Florida so it may be around for a while. Even here though, I believe that if you're at an indoor venue, especially at night, or wearing pants, men should not be showing thier ugly toes. Unfortunately, this type of sandal-wearing has grown in popularity. It goes along with the shaggy hair and beach bum style that younger people are into, I think - which seems popular regardless of proximity to a beach.

You see this in larger metros here in Texas which is probably due to all the transplants. Once you get out away from the city, especially out west, flips aren't going to do guys much good. Anyhow, I think it's pretty silly my self outside of hanging out the pool or beach etc.

Flip flops or sandals are the norm here, at least with shorts.

My BIL wears his with socks which is not the norm here.

To me when you've got 100 degree weather for 100 days in a row, you should wear whatever shoes are the coolest and most comfortable.

I have been wearing sandals for 50 years, never cared if it was fashionable or not.
