Why not?

I assume that everything will be free.

Keep in mind that your student loan is a CONTRACT between you and your lender. I doubt that a federal magic wand will make that go away.

The problem of "retrograde" free tuition is how far one would go back to provide the "free tuition". ten years? Twenty? Fifty?

Only in-state tuition at public colleges is free for undergraduates(first 4 years of college). Room/Board, meals, fees and books still need to be paid for by the students. These costs thousands of dollars each year, so loans will still be needed, especially for students that live on campus because room/board averages $10k year and books average $1200/year.

Since only public in-state tuition is free, anyone attending a public school that doesn't live in that state won't get free tuition. Anyone attending a private school won't get free tuition.

More than half of the colleges in the US are private and students going there don't get free tuition. Of the public colleges, there are a lot of out-of-state students and they won't get free tuition.

Tuition for masters and doctorate programs won't be free. Neither is med, dental or law school.

No, current loans don't go away. What he's suggested is going back to the old method of setting student loan interest rates, which would effectively cut the rate on existing loans by about half.

That may not sound like that much, but it's a huge deal that drastically eases the student loan burden on people who are already in debt.

He would also need to get any of his ideas through congress, there is little chance he could enact many if any of his big ideas.

If the Republicans block a supreme court nominee for the next 11 months, then the Senate, House and Presidency might be Democrat controlled because the GOP will be jumping off a cliff. It's almost as bad as halting the government. This doesn't go over well with voters and they would vote out lots of Republicans in congress and pick a Democrat for president too. To stick it to the party that is causing obstructionism. It'd be pretty hard to try to blame Obama for an 11 month delay in approving Supreme Court nominee. It will backfire, guaranteed.

Neither will happen.

Nothing that costs money to provide can be free. If the entity that produces the goodie does so for free, that entity will soon go out of business.

Our rights are inalienable and are for ideas/concepts such as life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Our rights are not for services are products that the service provider or manufacturer had to spend money producing -- if they were, those service providers/manufacturers would have gone belly up.

Ask yourself this... who did you mail your check to this month for the right to liberty? How much did it cost?

Neither happens but neither happens because just because he becomes the president, the law doesn't automatically change.

As to what will happen once he argues for a program, no one knows at this point what if anything will happen.

You're allowed to vote?

Maybe you should hold off voting until you read the Constitution (which will answer your question).
