It was a racial issue because Juan Williams framed it that way. Yes, numerically most people that receive food stamps and collect government welfare are White, but whenever someone talks about food stamps or welfare, people make the assumption that they are talking about Blacks, including people like Juan Williams. His claim that Newt's comments were insensitive to minorities shows this mentality.
Newt knows exactly what he is doing when he uses racially charged statements to fire up the base. Anyone that claims that when Newt calls Obama a "food stamp President" that his statment doesn't intentionally include subtle references designed to appeal to racists is either lying or incredibly naive.

To me it's the willfully naive. It is sad to say that.
It would help if you listened to what he said. He wants government to GET OUT of the way and let the jobs grow and let people get back to work.
Most of the people in the room that attended the debate were conservative. You think liberals would clap and cheer republicans that much?
Statements like "help learn how to get a job, learn how to get a better job, own the job" ... sounds a lot to me like government intervention programs e.g. CETA, Job Corp, etc... All that has already been done at the federal level - not really original to Newt.
While I applaud anyone standing up for the ethic of work,
Newt short changes the point when he brings up food stamps - even the "Food Stamp President" per say.
The fact is 1 0ut of 4 on food stamps today are
CHILDREN.
The reality is there are not enough jobs in America for
all those who want to work now. The sadder truth is
many jobs will not be coming back either.
Next, Newt will be reminding us how he walked 5
miles to school and read by candle light
Oh my goodness sake, where do you live, under a rock or something? there are stories she asked for the divorce, but that is a he said/she said, so no one will ever really know who is telling the truth. She had a tumor removed, no one has any idea if it was cancerous, as that too is in question, but the worst part of your rediculous comment: dieing of cancer. She is about 80 years old now and very much alive!!!!!

Oh...don't tell him that...his fantasy land would be shattered.

Oh you mean, except for those jobs that "Americans won't do", right? The ones the illegals have? I guess most unemployed people would rather sit in front of the TV on unemployment than do those jobs, right?
When unemployment pays better than manual labor, something is NOT RIGHT.

This whole country is spoiled.
That old canard needs to be retired! Name me ONE job that Americans won't do, just ONE job that Americans aren't doing RIGHT NOW! I DARE YOU!!

Gladly.....
Potato farmer Keith Smith saw most of his immigrant workers leave after Alabama's tough immigration law took effect, so he hired Americans. It hasn't worked out: Most show up late, work slower than seasoned farm hands and are ready to call it a day after lunch or by midafternoon. Some quit after a single day.
In Alabama and other parts of the country, farmers must look beyond the nation's borders for labor because many Americans simply don't want the backbreaking, low-paying jobs immigrants are willing to take.
