Results for Iowa Republican Caucus (U.S. Presidential Primary)
Jan 03, 2012 (100% of precincts reporting)
Rick Santorum 29,944 24.5%
Mitt Romney 29,926 24.5%
Ron Paul 26,182 21.5%
Newt Gingrich 16,210 13.3%
Rick Perry 12,574 10.3%
114,836
Looking at the results, there were only around 115 thousand votes cast.
Not quite 4% of the state population.
Does that mean that there are only a hundred thousand or so Republicans in Iowa?
Or are there only 115 thousand Iowa Republicans that care enough to vote for these guys?

Standard party caucus numbers. Actually it's a better turnout than average. Very few people actually get off their butts and go vote in the general election on a presidential election year. So it's hardly surprising that only a tiny fraction show up at the party caucuses.

I think it has more to do with people just seeing through Romney as a total fake and desperately searching for an alternative... any alternative. Santorum got lucky as he connected with this part of the electorate just in time for the caucuses. I think this will be a recurring story throughout the nomination process.

Now its Santorum by 4. Last report before the two changes was two precincts outstanding. Not sure if the two changes which put Romney up by 1 and then Santorum up by 4 were those two precincts coming in or just random bouncing of numbers which can happen from time to time.

They have mysteriously lost a couple boxes of ballots. I am not liking the sound of this. They were from counties that lean Romney also.

Clinton County is the only one left with 3% of the votes remaining to be counted. Results are to be announced shortly by the RNC.

Either way, it does not matter who "wins." Iowa came out nearly a dead tie. Even if Romney gets #2, it further strengthens his campaign in New Hampshire.

You're probably right, and it isn't a good sign for the GOP. Repeated exposure to and scrutiny of both Romney and Santorum will not wear well.
Nor would either of them fare well against President Obama. I'll be curious to see how many Paul supporters make good on their vows to write him in in the general election. That's a game-breaker.
