Here is my pet peeve since we are sharing! I was an assistant math teacher while I was finishing my masters to be a counselor and I used to get so annoyed when the kids would say O instead of zero. For example, when giving their phone number 540-8769, it should be said five, four, ZERO, eight, seven, six, nine and so many people say O, like the letter O. The letter is O, the number is zero!
Sorry, it is like nails on a chalkboard for me. My students would get points off if they said that.
Yes. I was guilty of that at one time. Thank goodness for a kind co-worker who set me straight.
If people would just not be so touchy about being corrected this world would be a better place. I now wonder how many times I made that dumb mistake and how many people must have noticed it, but said nothing.
'As far as a master's degree is concerned, I know MANY people that have one that don't speak nor write properly. I am just thankful that my master's was preceded with 16 years of Catholic education and nuns that drilled grammar and mechanics into us.'
people - who
things - that
'who' is used for people, and
'that' is used for objects
Unless you're like some twirp fellas I have known who objectify women, I suppose.
My wife, born and raised in Germany, speaks better English than I do. She teaches German at a nearby middle school and is frustrated that too many of her studenst don't know enough ENGLISH grammar for her to build on. SHE writes the Professional Development Plans for her AMERICAN colleagues (including the ELA (English) teachers...) How sad is THAT???

when i was a very young child, i learned to recite my first phone number as seven-seven-O-eight-nine. (yes, only five digits.) i never say "O" when i mean zero, except when i recall that number (and, you have to admit, O has a nicer ring to it). i think it's mainly a telephone thing, since zero on the telephone dial (now keypad) is associated with "O for operator."
WHY WHY WHY?
I want to know why so many people (even normal looking ones) speak so horribly with the "me and her or her and myself aint got no place to go..... etc."
Cauz English is a foreign language to me. Overstand this, I-and-I like to sound kewl.
I-and-I dont give in to downpression.
