Here in NC I have heard Skreet (street), Skraight (straight), conskuction (construction), skrimp (shrimp). Why hasn't anyone corrected people from saying this? Never heard it until I moved to NC

My pet peeve is when people say INK PEN. It just drives me crazy! ALL pens are ink. INK PEN is just redundant.
However, when I moved to North Carolina from New Jersey, I found a paper in my front yard that one of the kids in the neighborhood had dropped. Imagine my horror when I read the words on the paper that was titled HOMONYMS: tin/ten, pin/pen etc!
Perhaps this explains why that is where I first met people that said, "INK PEN." They needed to differentiate between a pen and a pin.
i was told by someone from oklahoma that mary, marry, and merry are homonyms as well. who knew?

whoa. the words on this thread are really really making me spit out my drink.
im enjoying it though!
Okay my biggest pet peeve is the REAL-TOR vs. REAL-A-TOR argument. I can't believe how many people throw in the extra syllable in realtor!! That drives me crazy. I think I mentioned this on another thread- I'm beginning to think it really is pronounced as 'REAL a tor'.

When I went to school my small group of friends would consider it a favor if our speech were corrected. It's certainly better than seeming a fool in front of those who can not love you for yourself.
My parents, too, would do this. Now my husband will correct me and I, him, with no resentment, but with appreciation, simply because it is a good thing to know how to speak and a not so good thing not to.
I think people don't want to sound as snobs because they never know how another person takes such comments, and they are correct.
On the other hand, society must have standards.
I think it is a good thing that we are gradually losing our regional differences in the US. Years back, I would listen to syndicated talk on the radio and could not understand some of the people who thought they spoke English.
A person may have a lot to contribute, but much of it is lost if he cannot express himself properly. It can only help a person to speak well.
