Be careful with these little ones around kids. AND you need to get that nipping nipped in the bud. Herding breeds are notorious for this...I'm dealing with it right now and it takes humungus consistancy.
OMG, Corgis are the cutest puppies EVER! Congrats on your new addition, and I must say that I'm quite jealous... I have always wanted a Cardigan Welsh Corgi, and was ironically just looking at them on Petfinder a minute ago. They are fabulous dogs, and I'm sure you will be very happy.
We've had Chevy for two weeks now,and it's been quite a ride. Last Wednesday and Thursday morning he was just awful. His behavior was terrible, and I also woke up in somewhat of a bad mood. I came close to saying we needed to give him away which really upset my wife, but she almost agreed with me.
Thursday night it was like he was a totally different dog! He's been great ever since for the most part except he still nips at us WAY too much. He now has one ear up and one down!! Hopefully the other one will perk up soon!
We absolutely love this dog to death, and I can tell he loves us too!!!! He will get a big test this weekend when he meets my rambunctious 4 year old nephew!
Here some more pics I took:
Still absolutely adorable! Sorry to hear he was being a terror, but that's all part of puppyhood... trust me, it gets better eventually. Just make sure you are consistent and firm from the get-go, even when he gives you those cute puppy eyes. I have a herding mix myself (Cattle Dog/Kelpie?), so I agree with the poster who said to curb the nipping asap. Here's what I did with Rudy - any time he nipped my heels, I would simply freeze and stand completely still for a few seconds. Once he was calmed down I would continue moving, so he learned quickly that nipping has the opposite effect as planned. He's great about that now, but still gives the occasional heel-nip if he gets REALLY excited about going out... he also likes to herd the cats (we have 3 in the house), just with a little nose push on their butts.
P.S. The most valuable piece of advice I ever heard was this - a tired pup is a happy pup. Wear the little guy out with walks and socializing, and I guarantee he'll cause less trouble at home.
Thanks again for all the compliments and advice everyone! We love the little guy to death! He got me on the ear today, but he's been really good today other than that. I think the nipping might be getting a little better.
