DaisyTattoo4 my heart and prayers go out to you and your husband for Sheba. I'm glad that the day went as well as it could and you made it through as I know it's so hard.

Erica likewise you have my prayers for you and Scout. I'm so glad you were able to be hiking with him last week and now you can send him off in the mountains he loved with you.

If you have recently lost a pet and not read the thread The Last Will & Testament of an Extremely Loved Dog on this board then do yourself a favor and read it as it might help you with your grief. Any of our dogs could have written that if they could write!

I am so sorry, thinking of Sheba and Scout. My husband took our Rocky's passing very hard, he died March 28th, as he used to walk him in the morning and evening and all the neighbors would talk. It was a social thing and as Rocky aged, he enjoyed these leisurely walks as opposed to the more energetic ones. Our prayers are with you both. My son's dog lives with us and was very lonely for Rocky. We have a puppy, and it is quite a handful from an older dog. We were thinking a rescue dog and were afraid of the alpha thing and fighting. This puppy stuff is very difficult as the other dog is older and doesn't want to play and gets bitten with the sharp little teeth.

Alessia, what is happening with Luna - you mentioned she has dry eye. My son's dog is being treated for that I have an ointment that I use up to 3 times a day for it and they test his tear production every few weeks. It has been ignored most of his life by the other vets he had where they lived before. You mentioned a therapy of two weeks, is that for Luna's eyes? And your dentist appointment Are you ok?

Jan, where is the Last Will & Testament located in the thread?

They gave me a ointment for tears production... actually her eyes (mainly the right one) don't seem dry but there's a lot of "mucus"/"weird eye secretions... and what I'm afraid of is that this might be a symptom of keratoconjunctivitis sicca... and I've no idea if this can be cured or not...
the holistic vet told me last time these are secretions caused by his therapies (toxins going away) but I'm sure it's not true as the thing is getting worse and luna is bothered by the whole thing...

The problem is that there's no specialistic vet in the area... and the one who just saw Luna today is not so qualified...
he told me to try with this "gel" (drops acually) to produce tears... and see what happens in two weeks... if these "stringy secretions" will be gone or not....

I'm so sad...!!! uff....
To Jan (as usual) or anyone who knows: I know that Dash had dry eye after RT... did he also have eye secretions?

Thanks Darbi for your interest and Jan... for your future answer...

Kisses and Hugs to all the others on the forum and their pets, here or at the rainbow bridge...

alessia, I just looked up the long word you used which is dry eye - and you are doing the right thing - it may be that Luna will need these drops or gel for a while - as in Sarge's case, probably all his life. Bulldogs are very prone to this condition. Some forums have said that they put the drops in their dog's eyes up to 3 or 4 times a day to lubricate them. Did they do an eye test to see how the tear production is - a little strip of paper that shows the tearing. Sarge does have a secretion with his dry eye, only in one eye though - it is a white/gray color. We thought it was an infection and the doctor said it was a symptom with the dry eye. You are doing the right thing by keeping Luna's eyes well lubricated as they directed you to do.

The vet today had a sort of test... the tear production couldn't be exactly measured but he said it seemed to be less than normal...

He also told me to give her the drops 3 times a day... does your son give it to sarge every 8 hours or 3 times a day in general? When I go to work... it's impossible for me to respect the 8 hours.... I can do 9/10 hours... than 2ice again in the rest of the day... unless I wake myself 8and her) up in the night to give her this ontment....

ARGH!!!!!

TAHNKS DARBI!!!!!!!!! A LOT!!!!!!

Alessia, are your using Optimmune (generic is cyclosporine)? It's an expensive ointment ($50 for a 1.5 gram tube) that we used since the first radiation. I used that 2X/day plus eye drops every 2-3 hours (or whenever I could) for Scout, except at night of course. The cyclosporine is great. Tears are made of liquid stuff and mucousy stuff, so when the liquid stuff is missing, what you see is the mucous.

My bags are packed for Colorado. My daughter and I made a nice small box with a picture and lovely poem so that I could bring a bit of Scout. I thought you all would like the poem. Not sure who wrote it, but I feel like I could have:
We have a secret, you and I, that no one else shall know,
For who but I can see you lie each night in fire glow?
And who but I can reach my hand before we go to bed
And feel the living warmth of you And touch your silken head?
And only I walk woodland paths and see ahead of me,
Your small form racing with the wind so young again, and free.
And only I can see you swim in every brook I pass
And when I call, no one but I can see the bending grass.

Thanks so much for all of your kind words; they've meant a lot.

Erica

Darbi here is the Last Will & Testament http://www.showdog-magazine.com/Poems/poem126.htm

Beautiful poem Erica, Have a nice trip!

Alessia. yes Dash too had eye goo at times after the radiation in the dry eye. It is normal. And I was told he would need his eye drops for the rest of his life as the dry eye would not go away.

What I'm afraid of is that this sort of mucus is in both eyes.. and not only in the right one... and I'm afraid of what might happen after 6/9 months... cataracts in both eyes???
I was told that the dose in the left eye was minimal... and I'm wondering if it is true.

No Luna is not using Optimmune anymore... she only used it during RT and in the 3 weeks afterwards... for the last month she didn't use anything as the tears production seemed to be normal.... I'm going to call the oncological center as soon as they open on Monday morning to see what they think and what's the best treatment for this....
For now we're only using a ointment which actually is artificial tears....

Thanks to all of you and to Erica: have a wonderful trip to Colorado....
