My Westie goes crazy during thunderstorms and she is absolutely bonkers during fireworks on July 4th. She is not afraid, it seems more like she's really angry, but she runs & barks non-stop during the noise & stays agitated for a long time after. This is bad enough most years, but right now we are also dealing with a torn cruciate ligament & I am supposed to keep her calm & stop her from running & jumping. This is not going to be possible during fireworks. Does anyone know of a place in NJ, NY or PA that is quiet & has no fireworks where we might be able to get a room for the night? I know that's a tall order, but any help would be deeply appreciated. Thanks!

Don't know about a room but have you considered a thundershirt? That might help.

You also might have more responses asking about a room in one of the city-specific forums.

I'm sure there are LOTS of places. I live in PA and where I am (near Hershey) I can almost guarantee my dog will not hear any fireworks.

I agree with the above, try a thundershirt and even earplugs. Maybe even music turned up a bit in the room she's in.

I think if you go someplace unfamiliar, your dog will be even more agitated.

In this case I suggest you get something from the vet to put her to sleep during the fire works. Nothing you try now will be 100% & you sure don't want her hurting that leg again! TALK TO THE VET!!! Maybe you could ask them to Board her... Good Luck!

Put her in a crate, in a dark room, close the doors, blinds and turn a radio or TV up LOUD.
Being in a crate will stop her from running around and possibly hurting herself. The loud tv or radio will help drown out the fireworks.

You can also give her a little bit of a doggie downer to help chill her out. Google benedry dosage for dogs... won't knock her out, just make her drowsy. Follow the directions.

I give my terrier benedryl on the 4th as she hates fireworks!

I thought about a crate but I wondered if she wouldn't feel trapped and become frantic in the crate trying to get out. She should still hurt herself spinning around in the crate unless she's sedated. Loud background noise is a good idea.

I agree with talking to the vet about a sedative. I've personally never tried benadryl, and I probably wouldn't do so without talking to the vet first.

If your pup isn't used to a kennel, I wouldn't put her in one for the first time on the 4th. They have to get used to the kennel in order to feel comfortable and "safe" in it.

Christy... is your dog on any medications? If yes, call your vet and ask them if a small dose of benydryl would be a problem. Or ask them to prescribe a doggie downer for you.

If not, then there should be no issues if you follow the directions.

I live in the country, and trust me... the fireworks are worse out here.

I swear, if someone says black, someone on here will come back with NO... it's white!!!
