US Embassy celebrates 4th of July earlier out of respect for Ramadhan | The Jakarta Post

I'm sorry, but is this really necessary? How is celebrating our national independence day inside our own embassy some affront to Islam now? This wasn't necessary before but now it is?

What's the problem? I think it shows that they're being thoughtful and considerate. There's nothing that says that our Independence Day MUST be celebrated on July 4.

Perhaps it wasn't necessary before because July 4 wasn't during Ramadan in years past. (I don't know the dates of Ramadans past, but I do know that the dates aren't "fixed")

You can't find anyone to clean during ramadan.

When in other countries one must respect that country's traditions and customs.

Let them all fly back to the US if they really insist on celebrating July 4th.
That is a US holiday, not an Indonesian holiday.

Interesting double standard.

When people of other countries and cultures celebrate those customs here in the US, people get up in arms over that.

But when we change US customs when in other countries to show respect, people get up in arms over that.

The reason is within the link:

"The event also showcased a number of American products and businesses"

You strike while the iron is hot and all that.

The embassy is US soil.

Whether it's US soil, you're still a presence in their country.

I can't imagine many Americans would be thrilled if an Embassy in the US threw a big joyous party (for whatever holiday they celebrate) on our Memorial Day.

Methinks this is just an excuse for an anti-Muslim thread.

If this were a story about the US Embassy in Israel moving the date of a celebration because it coincided with Yom Kippur, no one would be complaining.
