Greetings,

Can you group offer some advice on which suburbs and neighborhoods we should be looking in?

- safety is important
- good school system is important
- family-friendly neighborhoods
- good home size for the price ($ per sq ft)
- commuting to/from/within Troy (lower priority but relevant)

Thanks very much.

My favorites are not real close to troy, ecept for the Grosse Pointes.

Otherwise I like
Grosse Ile
Northville
Plymouth
South Lyon
Milford

All but Milford have top notch schools and Milford schools are quite good.

IN the North Oakland County Area that you are looking Troy is ok if you want to live in suburban sprawl. Birmingham has a nice downtown and some great houses, but it is very high end and everything that goes with that.

Rochester is a great town, great schools. Might be a bit far away.

If you are going to settle for Sprawl, just stick with troy it is as good as anything around there and you can spend more time with your family.

Troy has everything you are looking for, there is no need for a long commute if you are going to be working in Troy. West side of Troy is more expensive than the east side because is closer to Birmingham and the Bloomfields. I believe there are some areas in the west side that have Bloomfield Hills schools (I may be wrong), but the rest of Troy is mostly Troy schools which are good also. I have some friends that live on the north east corner of Troy with Troy schools, they got a lot more house for the money and they are very happy with the schools.

I wouldn't mind living in Troy. Sure, the city itself doesn't have the character or status quo that Birmingham or Bloomfield Hills does but it is still very close to all of those areas. For the most part Troy's neighborhoods are very well kept and many of them are older neighorhoods with larger shade trees and are more or less "complete".

I know someone that decided to buy a brand new house in Lyon Twp. about two years ago when the were only three houses in the entire subdivison. Well guess what? There are still only three houses in that neighborhood and one of the houses is empty.

So basically they have to drive through an entirely empty neighborhood to get to their house were they have one neighbor many lots down. Probably not the "community feel" they were expecting when the bought the house.

I'll save you the trouble. Stay at least 10 miles outside the city limits of Detroit. That's basically what everyone on this forum will tell you.

I would look into Macomb county. They aren't as "busy" as the Troy area and aren't all politics yet.

I would stay in Troy too. I live in Royal Oak and I love it ( I wish I could work there, I work in Redford unfortunately). Hey! Royal Oak could be an option...it's not shabby at all and its close to Troy....

My favourite areas in Metro Detroit are Bloomfield Hills, Bloomfield Township, Birmingham, and Franklin.
