What are the best suburbs in the Detroit Metro area to raise a family and why? In general is the Detroit Metro area a nice place to live or is the "bad rap" it gets true?

Taylor? j/k..

What is the budget? Bloomfield if you can do $500K and up ...

Northville, Troy, Birmingham, Grosse Pointes..why? They all have outrageous taxes which keeps "those" people out...if you avoid the border cities. Those that are 2 cities removed are really nice. Expensive but nice.

In general, everything is alright as long as you have a car.

Downriver is more "redneck"-ish, Oakland County is upscale "I got mo' money than you" lifestyle, Macomb County is pretty much "vanilla suburbia heaven" and the suburbs directly to the west of Detroit are pretty much mundane almost similar to Macomb County.

I personally think the vanilla suburbs would be the best to raise a family in.

All of Oakland County is not upscale, by any means. Hazel Park, Madison Heights, Ferndale, Oak Park, Southfield...no. Bloomfield Hills, some parts of Rochester, Rochester Hills, Troy, maybe.

Macomb County is nice. Water bills are much lower than OC. It is also pretty diverse in Warren, Sterling Heights...

Depends on what you are looking for exactly and your price range. Or how far in the suburbs you wish to be.

I feel Birmingham,Bloomfield Hills, most of West Bloomifeld,Novi are safe/upscale areas with good schools. Each vary in terms of prices and feel but are usually near shops, restaurants, parks. They have good school systems with extra after school activities as well. In all areas there is a wide range of prices for homes, condos and apartments as well.

I am looking into the same thing. So far I have narrowed it down to Farmington Hills, Novi or Canton. Is Bloomfield Hills and West Bloomfield diverse? I grow up in Taylor back in the 90's and I know W Bloomfield and Bloomfield Hills wasn't diverse at that time.

There are a few professional athletes living in WB which would add to the diversity.

Bloomfield Hills I feel is the least diverse out of the list but I don't think you would have a problem or feel out of place. I know from growing up in the area to now things have changed where you see more diversity. When I was little that was not the case.
