Hi, everyone. I'm feeling better -- thanks for asking, phonelady61.
My car, however, is not doing so well. It's been in the repair shop for 2 weeks now. First they said the problem was my rear differential. Then the called back and said they had replaced the rear differential and, when test-driving it, they heard the grinding noise louder than ever. So they took off the new rear differential and put my old one back on. They then said they found metal particles in my transmission pan (I had asked them to do a 100,000 mile checkup and that's how they found the metal). So they said they had to rebuild the transmission. That was the end of last week and they're still not finished.
They blamed the misdiagnosis on the fact that my car is 22 years old -- even though it has only about 100,000 miles. They're used to working on cars that have a computer system that will tell them what's wrong. I guess the real auto mechanics who repaired cars in the good old days have all retired.
I'm just praying that the transmission really is the problem and that I wont have spent twice what my car is worth only to find out that it's not.
I hate living without a vehicle. I've had to order grocery delivery twice now. I'm so thankful for that option but there are so many foods that cant be ordered via delivery (frozen, etc). And I've had to postpone doctor appointments and Lulu's veterinarian appointment repeatedly.
YAY! They just called. They test-drove the car and it’s fine. I’m SO happy!
The total bill is $2,084. That includes re-building the transmission, new rear shocks and oxygen sensor – as well as doing the state inspection for my 2021 tag and an oil change with synthetic oil I had asked for the state inspection and oil change as long as the car was in the shop anyway. They did another 100,0000 mile checkup (I had the first one done 2 years ago) and said the car is good to go.
The transmission re-build was $1,800 so I think they gave me a good price on everything else, probably because they had my car for so long.
They’ll come get me tomorrow around 11:00. Then I have to run some errands. It’s so hard to live in Houston without a car for 2 weeks!
I'm so happy!!!!! Not about the bill, but that you finally have your car back!! I am basically a home body but take away my car and I get cabin fever in 24 hours!

Same here, Camper. I was climbing the walls. I had meals and groceries delivered during the 2 weeks but I'd still get a knot in my stomach when I looked at my empty garage.
In a way, this has been a positive experience, despite the stress. There have been times when I considered giving up my car and just taking taxis wherever I needed to go. I figured it would save me a lot of money. But now I know I couldnt do it. Thank goodness I discovered that before i did it.
Oh nice update! Now hopefully, this car should be really good for along while.
I hear you about giving up a car. We have always had 2, and when we moved, due to DH;s car dying and other stuff going on , we figured we would manage with 1 car and see if that would work. It worked ok, and if it was a necessity it would be doable. However, when you are used to having a car and flexibility it really is an adjustment. Financially it really did seem that using uber when the car wasn't available woudl really be much cheaper than another car. (also because most of the time, we were able to adjust our schedule and really never needed to call uber). It's just a real mental adjustment so I totally understand about not giving up the freedom of a car
Have a good weekend and enjoy your restored freedom of movement and timing!
