Loneranger is a youngster so he really didn't have the non-AC experiences of a lot of us - like no AC in elementary school.

Speaking of screened-in porches our lake cabin used to have one and we would sleep out there on cots (they were cooler). We had a big fan that was purchased when Hockaday was torn down on Belmont and Greenville. Later daddy put some sort of extremely heavy used air-conditioner from the 1950s in...that sucker lasted for 30-something years. But that was the only AC there..we too were outside most of the time. Screened porches should make a come-back, they sort of went out because that showed you did not have AC.

Back to grandmothers - my other grandmother only had one of those swamp coolers in her living room - nothing in the bedrooms. She finally did accept AC window units but she was 80 at the time. Her kitchen was always hot, but I don't remember anyone complaining -- too much good food!

My mother-in-law FINALLY put central a/c in her house in East Texas about 4 years ago. She had a few window units and she would only turn on the one in the room she was in. She also turned the oven on EVERY SINGLE DAY to cook something. I think she still keeps it set real high and uses fans over the a/c and STILL uses the oven. If she would at least open some windows it would help but she doesn't .

I'd LOVE a screened in porch. We have a cooking & serving area down at the lakehouse that I'm thinking of screening in. Only because of the bugs w/ all of the food out.

Yes, it was comfortable today. The humidity was even lower than it has been recently.

I would much rather have a day like today with low humidity than a day at 82 degrees with soaking humidity. I never broke a sweat today and I saw 103 degrees. I love it!

A few times today when the wind was gusty I got a little chilled and even got goosebumps.

Yep, I'm too young to remember those days. I remember sometimes those good ole DISD portables didn't really have very good AC and it was annoying to have to be out there (but until I ended up in the magnet schools, somehow they never stuck the white kids in the portables ). It's still DISD policy to allow female teachers to forego panty hose in August, September, and May.

We do have a screened porch at home but we haven't installed a fan out there yet so we don't spend too much time on it in summer unless it's breezy.

With a heat advisory issued, the dew point not dropping out of the 60s, the low today was only 80 very early this morning, I think you might be coming down with the swine flu if you were chilled. How do you survive weather in the teens and 20s during the winter?

Maybe not, but were you really diagnosed with heat strokes? You must stay inside and keep hydrated. This heat is brutal.
