Happy 4th of July! My family has decided to take a road trip to Houston from Dallas after the 4th of July. Does anyone have any suggestions for must see places along the way? Towns etc. How about a scenic route?
And in Houston...any suggest hotels to stay at for the night? Thanks.

You should probably post this in the Houston section.

I do this drive frequently - and only stop once for a potty stop. There's not much to see other than Sam Houston's Statue and the Texas Prison Museum.

In Houston, there's a great park called Discovery Green (playground/splash) - it's near the Four Seasons (call them!...they may have a great rate).

I make that drive every week. It is not very scenic until you get down around Huntsville so I usually try to get to Houston as fast as I can (about 3.5 hours will do it from downtown to downtown). I agree that Discovery Green is worth checking out. There is a really nice new restaurant there called "The Grove" that I highly recommend. Don't know your budget, but I'm sure that on a holiday weekend you can get a good deal in almost any of the hotels in Houston. I like the Alden downtown. It's an old hotel that was renovated and turned into a boutique hotel. The old Warwick Hotel was renovated and turned into the Hotel ZaZa and it is very nice. That's in the Museum District a few miles south of downtown. The Galleria area also has a lot of hotels around it. The Derek Hotel is pretty cool.

I say the drive is not scenic at all coming out of Dallas. It gets better near Madisonville on south into Houston. Then completely sucks after Greenspoint, because I-45 is so tacky.

Do you commute to Houston from Dallas during the week?

I normally drive down early on Saturday AM and return on Tuesday evening or Wednesday evening. Today I made it in 3 hours 15 minutes.
