Pirates Set Sail for Long « East Dallas Times

The event of the year for J.L. Long Middle School — the spring musical — is just days away.

This year’s musical, “Arrg! Voyage to Consolation Island,” is about a quest for treasure by pirates and stowaway zombies along with a few other surprises thrown in for laughs. The unique thing about Long’s musicals, unlike most other schools, is that they include all original music and story line.

This marks the 23rd original musical written by David Hirsch and directed by Beverly Hirsch for the school, with Beverly serving many more years as the choir director of Long.
The production represents months of practice and includes a couple of hundred choir members, more than 50 parents, and multiple teachers and administrators to put it all together.

All three shows take place at 7:30 p.m., May 12, 13, and 14, in the school’s historic auditorium. The performances come with a brief intermission at which time concession snacks maybe be purchased.

The school has a long tradition of musicals and Beverly Hirsch has taught several generations of singers that have gone on to star in the nationally known musicals at Woodrow Wilson High School.

A little known fact about J. L. Long is that it has the largest performing arts program of any middle school in Dallas ISD.

Tickets cost $10 at the door. For more information call (972) 502-4700.

Wow, Sandy Lake Park. I don't think I've been there since High School Orchestra contests. That brings back some memories.

J. L. Long is now an official candidate school for International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP)

In the letter from the Director of the Americas:

"Your school will be assigned a consultant who will provide 20 hours of remote consultation and will arrange a two-day on-site consultation visit. In order to support the school in working towards authorization, we have enclosed further information on the consultation process and the terms and conditions involved, as well as further feedback on the school’s Application..
In addition, all teachers in the MYP section of your school can now be given access to the IB online curriculum centre (OCC), where teachers can obtain electronic versions of IB publications and teaching materials. Access to the OCC will also give your teachers the opportunity to participate with IB practitioners worldwide in online forums on programme-related topics"

We are considering our schooling options -- I know the elementary schools are good in Lakewood and Woodrow has a ton of community support. That speaks volumes, especially in a neighborhood where I assume many residents can send their kids to private schools, which I know some do. Maybe the majority? What I do not know as much about is J. L. Long. We are approaching the middle school years with our kids so I'd appreciate any feedback regarding Long. I know there is much value in going to a diverse school, but maybe the best option is to do private until high school? Please be brutally honest.
my niece and 2 of my younger siblings attended Long it's a great school.

*J.L. Long Middle School is a candidate school for the Middle Years Programme. This school is pursuing authorization as an IB World School. IB World schools share a common philosophy - a commitment to highquality, challenging, international education - that we believe is important for our students.
*Only schools authorized by the IB Organization can offer any of its three academic programmes: the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), or the Diploma Programme (and in addition the IB Career - related certificate). Candidate status gives no guarantee that authorization will be granted. For further information about the IB and its programmes, visit The International Baccalaureate offers high quality programmes of international education to a worldwide community of schools.

Less than two-dozen Texas public middle schools offer IB MYP curriculum.

Wait just a minute. When it was mentioned that Woodrow Wilson (eventual destination for these kids) has been deemed Academically Unacceptable, we were informed that TAKS scores were absolutely meaningless. I'm shocked at the discrepancy.
