I'd really like to see a mental health evaluation done on the mom.
I would think that would need to wait. Grief can bring up some trauma. Would you really be able to tell which part is from this recent event and which mental dilemma has been ongoing. ?
I was three years full fledge PTSD after a family member passed. I cannot imagine this mother's. Despare....
Before you even get to that point, you assess whether or not taking a 5 year old on such a hike is a good idea. You assess trail conditions, weather conditions, the child's hiking ability, and your own ability to get both of you back to safety if something happens.
The lack of planning and good judgment on the part of this woman is pathetic and sad.
Based on the reports of the condition of the trail, I have questioned whether a child that young should have been out there too.
But in the woman's defense, she and the boy had successfully hiked the trail before without problem. Being on a little dinky island, and yes it is a little dinky island, contrary to what some here have posted, there was probably not a lot of other hiking opportunities, or other activities to choose from. Plus if she hadn't fallen and broken her leg, she would have been able to get help, and the local search and rescue would have likely arrived and carried the boy out the same day.
I'm curious if we'll ever find out if she stayed where she was when she broke her leg or if she tried crawling to find help. If that were me, I would be crawling to find help because my kid was still out there.

The story does seem to have grown very silent. Maybe because of all the other news that's taken over the media.
I'm waiting for the autopsy, but maybe that won't even make the news.
It is NOT unmaintained! How many of you who are arguing over the details of this story have actually set foot in Ketchikan or better yet, on this trail?
None of them, but they have Google to tell them everything.
