No, it's really not. Maybe in Cleveland, but not anywhere else.

I've been to Cleveland a few times over the last 20 years. Most recent was about 3 years ago.

Honestly, the first thing I think when I hear "Cleveland" is "at least we're not Detroit! we're not Detroit!"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZzgAjjuqZM

After that I think of the dude who kidnapped those three women and then I think of the crazy stuff I've seen when I've been there.

I've been to the West Side Market, Great Lakes Brewery, the Christmas Story House, RR Hall of Fame, been around downtown, been to an Indians game, a few beaches, Shaker Heights, University Circle & Little Italy, etc, etc
Cleveland has all the stuff that a good city needs. It even has an impressive transit system for a city of its size. Subway, light rail, legit BRT.

But I've been there a few times because I have friends who used to live there and my brother lives in Columbus now. . Philly has some really rough parts and I'm by no means from a nice neighborhood but I couldn't get my head around Cleveland. I really like neighborhoods like Ohio City and Little Italy, downtown is pretty nice, but outside of those places
I just felt really uncomfortable thinking "where the hell is everybody? Is this place really shady? Should we get out of here?"

Generally I get the feeling that Cleveland people are proud of their city, they have some cool stuff there but they just can't get it together to make things happen in the way that Columbus or Pittsburgh have.

I'm from Baltimore.

To me, the cities are almost interchangeable. Biggest difference to me is that Cleveland is on a lake and Baltimore is on a bay..

When I think of Cleveland I think of old abandoned factories, a city that was once great but now down on its luck, that thought it had come back in the 90's only to sink back into hard times again in the last 15 years. Oh, and the weather, cloudy and cold all the time, like San Francisco, only with a winter too.

My wife travelled to Cleveland several times over the last couple of years for business. She thought it was a pretty OK town. Had some very complimentary things to say about downtown, better than my uninformed assumptions would have been.

Especially the Browns.

I'll be honest, it just seems like a depressing city. But I did hear that the overall cost of living is low

It's tough being a Cleveland sports fan to say the least. Nevertheless, if you're a fan, you're a fan. As for the weather, winters can be brutal, this past one especially as it was the coldest it's been in 20 years. However; despite the cold there seemed to be a lot more sunshine and less gray skies as with winters of the past. Summers on the other hand are warm, and humid on average, and northeast Ohio from June to September has more wall to wall sunshine than that of locations in the sunbelt. Here is a list of some positives for the city.

1. The horseshoe casino
2. Redevelopment of The Flats which when completed will be a combination of businesses, restaurants, bars, condos, apartments and a 20 story office building.
3. The Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame (which admittedly can be marketed better).
4. The Great Lakes Science Museum.
5. The new aquarium.
6. A world class art district and a world class orchestra.
7. Little Italy.
8. West 6th (called The Warehouse District) and East 4th are both vibrant entertainment districts.
9. 3 major sports franchises (some larger cities or cities very comparable in size can't boast this).
10. World class health care with The Cleveland Clinic, and University Hospitals.
11. The Cleveland Zoo (one of the top zoos in the country)
12. Numerous films shot here recently, with more to follow.

Now around the area
1. The Pro Football Hall of Fame (about an hour away in Canton)
2. The Cuyahoga Valley National Park
3. The new Thistledown Racino
4. Cedar Point (the greatest amusement park on the planet, and halfway between here and Toledo)
5. Mentor Headlands
6. Amish Country which is also a short drive away.

While Cleveland has it's issues with poverty, crime, and poor schools so does every big city. We've lost a bit of manufacturing due to jobs going overseas sure, but believe it or not we still make things here. And I really wish they would move forward with redeveloping the lake front, instead of just talking about it. But in short, it's not as depressing and doom and gloom as the naysayers make it out to be. I think we're in better shape than other rust belt cities like Buffalo, and Detroit, and definitely can compete with Pittsburgh which has had a resurrgence of its own. And given the way Chicago is going these days with its corrupt politics and issues with crime, we may just fare better than that city down the road too.

Oh ... Andl my sister lives in Cleveland, Ga. It's a nice little town.

One POS is not indicative or a reflection on the city or northeast Ohio as a whole.

I view it as a depressed area that I never want to have to live in, visit or travel through. When i think of it i think of failed industry, midwest weather and mentality. It seems boring with no Je ne sais quoi. I mean the football team is named the "Browns", could a more boring name be selected in a contest?

I should point out that "winning" a national party's convention bid is not really the prize you might think it to be. Boston won the Dem convention site a few years back, and nothing really happened, as the delegates simply stayed in the convention hall ( Boston Garden) all week. It was an extraordinary let-down to the city--no economic windfall whatsoever.

You're from Seattle. Doesn't it rain all of the time there? Furthermore, while your Seahawks won the Super Bowl, and no disrespect to the 12th man as you have some good fans, but you have nowhere near the legacy, the following, and the history of the Cleveland Browns. Furthermore, the name comes from being named after their first coach the legendary Paul Brown. A lot of what is in today's modern NFL including components of the West Coast offense run by Bill Walsh and the 49ers were taken from Paul Browns playbook.

As for the midwest mentality, Cleveland has aspects of both the midwest and northeast, especially in terms of architecture. As for the weather, winters suck, but I happen to love the warm midwest summers.

At any rate, I'd love to visit Seattle one day. Would I live there? Doubt it, but considering I want to visit all 50 states one day, Seattle Washington would be on my list.
