As we leave El Nino fast and head towards La Nina, I saw this graph this morning and said, wow, let me check how April and May 1998 was just to compare and see if there are any similarities..

Without getting too detailed...

April 1998 was above normal but it was the nights that did it. Only hit 70s twice that month. Mostly 50s and 60s which indicates clouds. Rainfall above normal.

May 1998 started off very wet and cool. 11 of 12 days had precip. It was overcast many days with temps struggling past 50s and low 60s, nighttime staying warm in the 50s

Sound familiar so far??

Then come mid May exactly 5/15/98 we started hitting 80s! Dried out but still had a couple of rainy days through end of month. We ended up above normal because we had 8 of last 15 days in the 80s!

(I don't think this May will repeat that, we'll see)

June was below normal with temps which goes with my gut. Still hit 2 90s that month. Above normal rainfall.

July 1998 slightly above normal with below normal rainfall. Everyday was above 80° except 7 of them. It rained 7 days that month.

August 1998 was above normal temps, normal rainfall.. 2 nights dropped to 40s! 2 nights stayed in the 70s!

No heat waves that Summer but a lot of 80s.

Lets come back to this post in 3 months and compare.

Seems like we had spring at the end of February.....or whenever that stretch of 70's was......I think it was Feb. I have not even heard the frogs in our backyard mating yet.....usually the peepers are in full force in April. That's when I know it is spring.

Okay Cam, can you look into your crystal ball and tell me if it's 70% or 20% chance of rain in Warrenton, Va Saturday for the VA Gold Cup races? I'm hearing both. I have my outfit and snacks planned. Picking up the mint julep fixings tomorrow. No matter, really. I'm going either way.
