True but the one difference is you don't have to switch from commuter rail to Amtrak (or switch within Amtrak) so the service (since the switch is within NJ Transit) is cheaper and more frequent (though it might take longer to go the same distance though).

Rhode Island really has only one major city, Providence. Most towns with larger populations are suburbs of it. The ponly really somewhat independent cities are Newport and Westerly and traveling to and from them would be similar to traveling from Stamford to Hartford by bus. Jay

True, and maybe longer because they make so many stops along the way. From what I recall it was a long ride to Newport. But the overall experience was good because the frequency was so much.

Stamford Rail Station to New Haven Union Station via Metro-North. (about an hour?)

New Haven Union Station to Downtown Hartford - Central Row via CT Transit New Haven/Hartford Express No.20 (1 hr 15 min)

Megabus offers bus service two to five times per day between New Haven and Hartford (40 mins to 1 hr 10 mins)

I would look into carpooling or vansharing as an option. The drive with minimal traffic would be a little over an hour, public transit would be at least two.

How is that anything different than what the OP was asking?? Same with the northwest part of the state (Sparta) to Atlantic City.

Since Megabus specializes in going from Boston to NYC is it possible they go from Hartford to NYC then?

Amtrak probably has lines for it, but it would be miserable, if done like everyday.

Peter Pan (Greyhound) also have buses that go from the New Haven train station to Hartford.
