Hey everyone. I'm looking to get feedback on a possible move to the Stamford area from the greater Hartford area. I'm an accountant and I have the possibility of transfering to an office just outside Stamford. My significant other is in the administrative field. I've spent a lot of time thinking about this and while Stamford is MUCH more expensive, the career opportunities are far superior to Hartford for both of us. As far as the cities go, I personally enjoy Stamford more though I've never lived there. We aren't commited to living in downtown, but would like to rent in Stamford if we make the move. I'm curious to hear from anyone that has lived in both areas and which they preferred and why.

Thanks!

Stamford is definitely a better city as far as amenities, restaurants, bars, etc. than Hartford. It's more comparable to West Hartford in that sense.

The problem is expense. Renting isn't a big deal, but when it comes time to buy - it can be difficult. Especially since traffic restricts commutes so much. If you want a town with good schools that's a short commute to Stamford, prepare to spend 3x more than you would in the Hartford area.

It's up to you to weigh the career advantages.

If your office is near a train station, it does open up more affordable housing options east/north.

Do you live in Hartford or the suburbs? What type of accounting do you do?

Thanks for the replies. We have no kids and have no intentions on buying a home or having kids soon. We live in the suburbs, near South Windsor. As far as accounting, I'm a public accountant so I work in a variety of areas.

I would think living near a MetroNorth stop would cause rents to go up, no? Especially in Stamford. The city's already expensive to begin with, but living near a train station could make an area more desireable and as such more expensive. I dunno, that just seems to be a selling point in alot of places, especially if you're close to New York City.
