Like I said be better if CT tax structure was such:
20% to 35% car and property tax collected by the Counties
No greater than 5% school tax collected by towns
5% tax can be collected by towns/cities with 50,000 or more people to help fund for police, fire, and EMS services in the town
5% Sales tax
Flat 5% tax on property owners who own cars or a home in CT collected by the State yearly
A Flat corporate tax of 5%
A change to progressive tax system:
2.5% for those making $5,000 to $20,000
3.5% for those making $20,000 to $40,000
4.5% $40,000 to $60,000
5.5% $60,000 to $100,0000
6% $100000 to $400K
7% $400K to $800K
7.5% $800K to $1Million
8% 1 Million or higher
50% of income tax return yearly to small business owners who can prove they own a company of 15 or less people
25% of income taxes return to independent business owners
Individuals with 2 or more children who are head of household making $5,000 or less income taxes will be withheld
Families making between $5000 to $25,000 with 2 children or more will not be taxed until they reach $5,000 during the year
$25,000 to $40,000 with 3 children or more taxes will not start until reaching $15,000 year
Individuals who are a resident of CT and have served 4 years or more in the military $10,000 of their income a year is withheld
Lower the gas tax to 25 cents
Legalize Marijuana and tax it at 10% with medical Marijuana exempt
Tax alcoholic and cigarette purchases at 12% with taxes going to DMHAS
Hospitals are exempt from property taxe

Why would you even want it anyway? You have moved around a lot over the years and do not own a home. Maybe you think you have nothing to lose but I think the vast majority would disagree. Jay

Nashville did it, with superb results. Not 100%-there is still some stuff towns control or differentiate, but it was a giant, excellent step. It was easier there as Nashville's tax base has been soaring the last several decades. So while I think it would be good if Hartford could pull this off, I have my doubts that they could. I can't see it working well pivoting around a city struggling with budget issues all the time, and a tax base not rapidly growing.

As a point of ignorance what is this 5% town tax and do you mean a percentage skimmed off payroll?

I've lived in a few CT zipcodes and never recall a town services tax. Couple the 5% tax to the income tax and it would make CT living very unattractive especially if there is still property taxes piled on top.

As of right now my MIL is taxed 32 to 35 % for her car, them 62% for her house she owns, and 5.5% for income tax.

Then add on the 6.9% sales tax and 50 cent per gallon gas tax

I feel could definitely lower it
Max total owed be say 35% by the county, 5% for schools, 5% for Fire/Police/EMS, & 5% by the State be 50%. Property tax be 10% to 12% less.

But of course, to the socialist left -- this is never enough. Hence "towns have too much sovereignty."
This is already going on. Our Robin Hood policies do this without financial efficiency. Maybe it could get even worse, but at this point what do we have to lose? I guess it's a direction that should be trusted much less in a liberal state like CT?

But Westport gas the money and that trumps the vote. You can't force a merger and there is no way that the voters in Fairfield, let alone Westport will agree to it. This is why they could never get busing of students between school districts. Those invisible lines that were set 150 or more years ago are very strong. I doubt they can be knocked down. Jay

Not sure even if East Hartford or Bloomfield would like to touch Hartford with a ten foot pole. But hey, money and promises has turned bigger heads.

This is something we didn't want to hear but the sad news is that 150 employees are being laid off and 100 of them are at Sikorsky out of Stratford. I'm sick of these layoffs. How is our unemployment rate not any higher than reported?
