Where were they 30 years ago? How much of a difference is there between No. 2 and No. 3? Again, when you are on top, you have no where to go but down. And when you are on the bottom, you do not have anywhere to go but up. That is kind of the way things work. Jay

I looked for announcements on new job creation in metro Hartford in the last 5 years but couldn't find any that weren't retail. Can you?

Not sure what you are looking for. Maybe you are not looking hard enough or in the right places. Again the unemployment rate will tell you all that anyone reasonably needs to know to conclude that there is job creation in Hartford. The unemployment rate does not drop for no reason. Not sure what more I can do. If you can't accept that, that is your problem. Jay

Not necessarily true. Not saying it's the case, but unemployment rate can "drop" by changing the definition of "unemployment", which has been done.

I turned down an offer roughly 2.5 years back to work with Anthem as part of an expansion to handle the expected influx of new business due to the ACA. Not sure if you count Wallingford as Hartford metro but it wasn't retail.

Come on now. That happened years ago and is not true in this case. Jay

I admitted it most likely was not. My point was to illustrate there are many non-genuine ways to alter those statistics without actually changing the REAL value those statistics are intended to measure. That was just one example that effortlessly came to mind.

Another example, which could very well be the case, is an increase in welfare recipients. For some reason, the the # of recipients per year for CT is proving difficult to find. But if there is an increase in people who are no longer considered "out of work" because they are "on the government dime" I'd say that's another disingenuous representation of the TRUE "unemployment rate" in CT or any state/region for that matter. This really really wouldn't surprise me at all considering we incentivize people to NOT work.
http://articles.courant.com/2013-08-...ubsidized-jobs

These kinds of convoluted and, basically deceitful, statistics are what we get when we let politicians decide what to include as "predictor variables". This problem is by no means limited to CT, however.

Let's see how this show plays out. Malloy is calling for a special session to help come up with budget solutions. About a month a go CT had a $103m deficit which was "closed" by emergency cuts. Today (one month later) CT now has a deficit projected at $120m. How does CT go from 0 to $120m in one month? Malloy calls for bipartisan talks as budget hole deepens | The CT Mirror

Doesn't help CT lost 7,600 jobs in September. CT lost 7,600 jobs in September; unemployment rate falls | HartfordBusiness.com

Time to get serious. I don't like some of the early answers.

Projected vs. actual tax receipts.

Its should have been a bi-partisan effort the first time around, but better late than never.
