The State Comptroller, Sean Scanlon is projecting another massive surplus of $1.3 billion. The Connecticut General Assembly is very busy with 218 Bills and an abundance of ideas to reduce the State sales tax. All this is great news.
We will see what shakes out. Jay

Some really bad ideas in those bills that I hope don’t come to pass. I can’t imagine the governor signing them.

It may not be the strongest in New England, but it could easily be 2nd to Boston. It goes well beyond Yale. Though Yale does have some of the most impressive art museums in the region.

Despite all the naysaying here, Subway reported a 9.2% increase in same-store sales in 2022. A sure sign that the changes put in place are having an effect. Jay

Governor Lamont has put forth a $20 million proposal to eliminate as much as $20 billion in medical debt carried by Connecticut residents.

As someone who has a good friend who lost all of their savings to a serious medical condition, I think this would be a good investment. No one should lose their entire life savings and be reduced to a pauper’s life just because of a serious medical condition. I hope it is approved. Jay

What changes are you referring to? The “improved menu”?

Less than 10% growth from 2021 to 2022 when more people are back to work in physical offices and they increased prices is not very impressive at all.

Subway for most people is very much a “it’s healthier than fast food” and “there’s nothing else around”. The increased usage of mobile app ordering alone should have accounted for a few percentage point increase in sales.

They should report feet sold vs prior year, so we can see if any of it was not price. It's possible volume dropped, and price rose more than 9.2%.

Know for a fact it’s mostly due to check. Not customer count. Food inflation is more than 10% YOY.
Also for the same reason, many franchisee’s are not participating in all the discounts offered by corporate. Simply can’t afford them. In related news, Bed Bath and Beyond mailed out coupons that have no use now.

Became a brand where you felt guilty if you ever stepped foot in there without a coupon!
Plus in a digital world, an expensive way to discount.
Subway has a similar problem.

You do understand that the food inflation rate you quote is for retail groceries. That’s not what Subway pays for the products they use. They have long term contracts so inflation doesn’t necessarily impact their food prices like it does you and me.

I’m not aware of franchisees refusing to participate in discount programs. They don’t have a choice really and could be brought up on false advertising charges if not offering them.

Also I believe those coupons are useable at the Bed Bath and Beyond stores that are not closing. In Connecticut they are the Norwalk, Brookfield, Guilford, Simsbury and Manchester stores. Jay
