Want to know where the cold air is? Try the San Luis Valley of Colorado.

Check out this forecast.

NOAA National Weather Service

Cambium would find the climate of Alamosa fascinating. Latitude: 37.46 Elevation: 7,539ft.

It's also a common thing in western NY (i.e. Buffalo/Rochester area, even their local NWS does it), but I don't know/never heard of anyone else who does it.

Actually much of the western US is having near-record cold right now. Apparently the Middle East too:

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-202_162-...own-jerusalem/

(NOTE: contrary to popular belief, Jerusalem and other "inland" Middle East locations in the mountains (i.e. Damascus, Syria; Amman, Jordan) do get a tiny bit of snow most years as their average winter low temps are around 40. It is being made a big deal in the news because it was 6-10" in these locales and also because in places right at the coast or lower in elevation in this region (i.e. Tel Aviv, Cairo, Dubai) even flurries have virtually never happened so the media just assumes that for the other locales......it's kind of like the mountains of California vs. the coast).

Fair point on NBC/U- but they have a very small stake in the consortium of owners (minority with little "skin in the game"). Although a good source, the NYT is a bit off on this one.

True, not enough that (thankfully) most NBC-owned properties that deal with news don't feel compelled to use the Weather Channel winter storm names, but enough that NYC's CBS-owned affiliate and WCBS NewsRadio 88 had to drop its "strategic alliance" with the Weather Channel for weather forecasting (probably a good thing in the long run....)

As for local weather, I noticed there seems to be a lot of dispute as to how sunny vs. rainy/cloudy it will be this weekend and wonder what effect that will have on the temps.

1 word to describe this weekend: Spring
1 word to describe next weekend: Arctic

Maybe highs in the teens; lows in the single digits to around zero. Supression will happen, which means storms will be supressed to the south.

No big storms on the way. Rain / drizzle / mix / maybe light snow Tuesday. Nothing big.

My dog going in for teeth surgery next week so forgive me for less posts.

I could not be happier with the forecast for this weekend and next....

Tomorrow morning: Perfect instrument flying weather with ceilings ranging from 300 to 800 ft with a very high freezing level---so no worries about collecting ice. Not only that, but according to the skew-t soundings, the cloud tops are in the 6000ft range which means I can get some good pictures and video skimming the tops of the solid undercast deck.

Next weekend: Coldest temps so far this season which means I'm making a beeline for Lake Placid to for some snow camping! Its supposed to drop to -8 there, but I'm hoping its even colder! -20 to -30F would be the sweetspot!

Yeah and the latest GFS18z looks VERY snowy for the rest of January. Run the loop, watch the freezing line stay to our south (so it stays COLD) and all the systems and moisture which would be snow after the 18th. SnowStorm after snowstorm every 3-4 days. Its long range "GFS" so dont put too much faith in it.
