Went to the new one in New Haven and wasn't too impressed. Not bad, but not great. Just your run of the mill fried fish.

I hear ya. I went that location once when it first opened and it was nice, good location/view, but the fried stuff is pretty average.

Had a lobster roll in Madison once and it was very solid.

I do like the location of L&Js. Good place to go for a beer and a few appetizers on a nice day, but not if you're craving a good solid meal IMO.

To add to this thread, I tried 3 excellent new spots in New Haven recently:

Roia - superb on every front. Service, ambiance, food, prices. Fully impressed, and the historic ballroom space has been beautifully restored. Stunning, really.
Briq - Some folk from 116 Crown and Barcelona put this together. Not convinced on the speciality cocktails yet, a bit on the sweet side - but great "global" tapas. Food was excellent.
Ordinary - Very cool new bar, also in the historic Taft space that Roia shares. Done by Caseus owner, he's beautifully restored the space and it has a very hip feel. Great cheese/charcuterie, European craft beers, old fashioned cocktails with a modern spin. Haven't tried the savory pies yet, but soon will. They are limited by their kitchen size as far as good, but it seems great for light fare.

Had a bad experience at the New Haven Shake Shack. Screwed up our order, took forever, burgers were overcooked.

We were not too impressed with Five Guys. The burgers are good but pricey. Fries good but pricey. We can almost go to Plan B for the same price. Too bad since they are building one near us in Glastonbury.

My wife just discovered Jakes and loves it. Too bad there are none around us. The closest is Rocky Hill which really is not that far. Jay

Agreed. We didn't eat there, but a bunch of us stopped in after dinner during Restaurant Week and it was like a blast from the past, like the 20s. So elegant. Nice cocktails too, and they opened up the upstairs bar for us.

We have it in Stratford. I tried it once, and haven't been back.

5 Guys is far superior. Even Wendy's is better. IMHO.

Really??? That is nothing like our experience at all. DW likes Jakes much better and at its worst I find it on par with 5 Guys. And it is certainly better than Wendy's. I guess we will just have to agree that we disagree. Jay

I'll third the Jake's > Five Guys argument.

I was sad to find out that Belgique in Kent (and the offshoot in New Canaan) closed in October. The owner went to work for the British ambassador's residence in Washington D.C.

I hope everyone in the area knows how lucky they were to have this place for so long.. it was world class.
