I also like to keep my desktop clean. Picture is from the Willis Tower Skydeck looking NE when I was there this past summer.

What does this have to do with what one's desktop looks like?

Easiest would be:

Using fingers and brain.......

Copy: Ctrl+c

Paste: Ctrl+v

-or-

Using Windows menus.....

Highlight the text you want to copy then click on Edit/Copy

Move your cursor to where you want the text to go and click on Edit/Paste

What plwhit said is the easiest method but if you were actually asking for a 3rd party app, see this link.
I used and like Ditto (on that list) but the portable ArsClip is pretty cool too.

Well it could be worse if you had other peoples desktops. Search google images for "cluttered desktop" and you'll come across a ton of very messy desktops

for posting a screenshot:

step 1: hit PRINT SCRN key
step 2: click this link: imgur: the simple image sharer
step 3: hold CTRL and hit V
step 4: click upload
step 5: copy "direct link"
step 6: click the "insert photo" button on the forum and paste the link into the box
