You beat me to it. I think this is a great addition to that area.

Agreed. I am a big fan of Jersey Mike’s already, and will certainly visit them when they open.

Jersey Mike’s seems to be very popular up north, as I went to one in Ohio about a month ago while on vacation. Down here, they don’t seem to be as popular unfortunately.

I'm surprised that they allowed this with Jimmy John's in the same center.

It's a chain that started up north and there might be more up there, but there's a Jersey Mike's in almost every mid to large city in the South. You can't throw a rock in Atlanta metro without hitting one and they're all over Florida.

Roses Discount Store is coming to the old Kmart on Macon Road.

“COLUMBUS, GA: Growth in Columbus' Midtown area continues after an announcement made on Monday afternoon by Midtown Columbus, Georgia Inc. has brought excitement to the area. A new discount retailer is heading to the former KMart store on Macon Road.

Shortly after the noon hour on Monday, Midtown Columbus, Georgia Inc. announced on its Facebook page that, "It's official! We are getting a Roses in the space previously leased to KMart in the Midtown Shopping Center." The Roses they were referring to are not going to be a landscape improvement project in the shopping center but rather a nearly 100-year old discount retailer heading to the former KMart storefront at 3200 Macon Road in Columbus.

Roses is part of Variety Wholesale, Inc.a family-owned company that finds its roots dating back to 1922. However, expansion of the company began around 1949 when John W. Pope took over the families five and dime stores and began the process of growing them into one of the largest privately owned discount retailers in the country with more than 400 stores today. The company is headquartered in Henderson, North Carolina.

The stores under Variety Wholesale operate under a variety of names that include Roses, Roses Express, Maxway, Super10, Bargain Town, Bill's Dollar Store, and Super Dollar. These are located mostly in the southeastern United States. Locally Bargain Town has a store on Francis Street about a mile from the location of the soon to be Roses store. There is also a Bargain Town store on U.S. 280 in Phenix City.

The former KMart store on Macon Road will soon be home to the new Roses store in Columbus. The property has been subdivided and became home to an AutoZone store that opened last week. There has been no word released how much of the remaining store space will be occupied by Roses. Midtown Shopping Center is made up of several retailers that include Ross Dress for Less, Shoe Carnival, Bealls Outlet, Dollar Tree, and Auto Zone, and Pita Mediterranean Street Food. Panera Bread recently opened its second Columbus store in an out parcel space near the former Kmart building.

The store sells a variety of items including clothing, household items, electronics, cleaning supplies, and much more. There has been no word if the opening of the new Roses store will have an impact on the existing Bargain Town store on Francis Street. There also has been no word on when work may begin on the new building.

Presently Variety Wholesale operates several stores in the region. There are presently Roses Express stores located in Manchester, Tuskegee, and Americus. Super Dollar stores are located in Union Springs, Greenville, and LaFayette in the immediate area.”

Complete waste of space. Rather it sit vacant for a better use.

Ugh. What a letdown. I understand from a business perspective that they need to fill the space but this was the last thing I wanted to see there.
