It's supposed to be a Google Server Farm with 300+ employees spread across 8 buildings.

Had to look that up. It appears they rebranded.

Default E-Scooter moratorium

Quote:
The City of Columbia is a scoot-free zone. At least for the next year.

Columbia City Council on Jan. 8 unanimously passed first reading on a one-year moratorium on any “shared mobility vehicle” businesses in Columbia, specifically programs that include electric two-wheel scooters that have been made popular in other cities with companies like Lime and Bird.

Hopefully they work on building infrastructure for the scooters if and when they allowed operate in the city. Scooters along with the soda cap connector would be great for getting around downtown, the Vista, and five points in pinch.

What a failure, this is why young people leave places like Columbia. I live in Charlotte and these scooters serve a massive utility here. Less drinking and driving and people are more willing to go out and enjoy the day. Yet another failure by the city council.

I understand the hesitation. I've enjoyed using the scooters immensely in Atlanta. But they have been a bit of problem and regulations have been passed in Atlanta to address those problems. I hope Columbia does something meaningful with that year other than just more rules.

You should do your research. Plenty of cities, including Charleston, Greenville, Asheville, Athens, Winston-Salem, etc., have at least temporarily banned these scooters. It's not a failure on Columbia's part at all; it's actually very prudent. You only see the upsides of these scooters while ignoring the problems they present as well. In Uptown Charlotte you see these scooters carelessly left all over the place, which is a bit unsightly and they can also present safety risks for pedestrians and other e-scooter users. This is a new technology and cities all over the country are pushing the pause button while they sort things out and determine how to regulate their usage. If that's your definition of "failure," then so be it.

They have them in San Antonio. I first heard about them from my sister and I thought it was a neat feature. I visited back in November and saw how the scooters are strewn about. They’re meant for transportation and also some fun; but I did almost get trucked by one on two occasions. I definitely think Columbia is right to balk at bringing these here. They’re pretty messy/tacky and a bit unsafe.

The big concern with Lime and Bird is the maintenance. They have released so many scooters and try to incentivize users to repair them, but users are not scooter repair experts. There have been countless stories about scooters having faulty breaks or breaking down unexpectedly. I think this is a growth fad that will be reigned back in the next two years.
