Sunday my husband and I went to Round Mountain (off of US 24, west of Lake George) and went back beyond the established campground to see how crowded it was. Came upon a campfire, unattended, smoking heavily; poured our two water bottles on it (did nothing as anyone would know). Frustrated because my husband called 911 several times and the connection was so bad we had to wait until we got to Lake George to call 911 to report the fire, and even then we had to go into a convenience store.

This is why we can't have nice things.

Rio Blanco County has been catching hell this afternoon, several small fires have started up as early as this morning. The biggest one by far is about 25 miles southwest of Meeker, known as the "Hunt Fire." 1900 acres have been burned, no structures burned yet--several BLM roads are closed. It's pretty much a barren area, no forests or anything. No relief in sight for temperatures on this end of the western slope. Today's high in GJ was 101, yesterday it was 105.

Authorities lift evacuations prompted by wildfire near Evergreen after rainstorm douses burn area

Quote:
Residents of about 1,000 houses in Evergeen were allowed to return home on Tuesday night after authorities announced they had turned the corner on a wildfire that was raging a day before.

Rain soaked the Elephant Butte Fire burn area for a second straight evening, prompting the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office to lift its evacuation order for a large area near Evergreen Golf Course.

The 50-acre blaze was at 25% containment “and climbing” by midday Tuesday, the sheriff’s office announced. . . .

Pine Gulch Fire near Grand Junction- Rocky Mountain Type 2 Incident Management Team Black (Team Black) transitioned with Upper Colorado River (UCR) Type 3 organization Tuesday, August 4 at 6:00 a.m. The team was requested due to increased fire activity, requiring a larger management structure to meet the needs associated with the incident as well as the ability to access a wider variety of resources to support firefighting efforts. Fire was very active with uphill fuel-driven runs on Tuesday. Fire activity to increase over the entire fire perimeter on Wednesday as atmospheric instability increases late morning and into the afternoon. Torching and spotting is possible with the potential for significant fire movement towards the north and northeast. Torching and short range crowning may occur.

232 personnel, 5,685 Acres

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. — Interstate 70 is closed both directions due to a large wildfire, according to the Colorado State Patrol (CPS) in Eagle.

The westbound lanes are closed at Dotsero, which is exit 133 and the eastbound side is closed at Canyon Creek, which is exit 109.

The fire is burning in South Canyon just west of Glenwood Springs, CSP Eagle said in a tweet.

It has burned between 35 and 40 acres and has been named the "111 Fire" according to the Glenwood Springs Fire Department. Several helicopters have arrived in the area to provide aerial support for the fire. . .

It's not how long the highway will be shut down, but CSP Eagle said to "expect an extended closure."
