Local radio KNZZ in Grand Junction has announced a few hours ago that the westbound lane of I-70 has now been opened, with conditions.
I would imagine that "conditions" would be to have two lane traffic going. The speed limit through the canyon is posted at 50 m.p.h., I think it's a safe bet that they would have signs up saying 40, maybe 35 m.p.h. In any event, it's good news for the travelers, and the truckers as well. Still, whenever I go through there, I generally keep an eye for falling rocks. I've been through the canyon a couple hundred times in my life, I know about those rocks. I'll be going through there in a couple days, have a lot of work to do at my sister's place.

ADD---the latest stats on the fire itself is 30,715 burned---33% contained.

Cameron Peak fire area received up to 14 inches of snow, dampening wildfire’s growth

The fire remains at 102,596 acres, or about 160 square miles, and is 4% contained

https://www.denverpost.com/2020/09/0...tember-9-snow/

"The Cameron Peak fire remained static overnight Tuesday, as the late-summer snowstorm dampened the wildfire’s growth after days of uncontrolled expansion.

The fire is still burning 102,596 acres — or 160 square miles — with 4% containment, said Paul Bruggink, spokesman for the fire response.

Areas of the fire received as much as 14 inches of snow, Bruggink said, though it’s still smoldering underneath the powder.

“This is not a season-ending event by any means,” he said. “We need a succession of these to do it.”

But the dampened activity will allow fire crews Wednesday to assess hot spots and plan courses of action for later in the week, when the weather is expected to warm and dry out, Bruggink said.

An assessment of damage from the fire’s growth over the weekend still has not been completed, he said, as roads remain impassable in some areas.

The Cameron Peak fire remains the fifth-largest in Colorado’s recorded history. All 10 of the largest fires in the state have come since 2002."

Well,it ain't over yet! KKCO-11, the NBC affilite from Grand junction, is calling for a red flag warning in northern Mesa County and also Rio Blanco and Moffat county. Temps are heating up to the upper 80's with 10% humidity going into the weekend. At least the fire north of Grand Junction is out but the one near Cameron Pass is still going.
