The NY Times is now reporting on these fires.

Excerpt: "...firefighters are battling to contain the Cameron Peak Fire, which has burned since August and grown into the largest fire recorded in Colorado history. On Sunday, it eclipsed 200,000 acres. And the latest fire spread rapidly, engulfing more than 8,000 acres by Sunday .... Dry conditions have also stoked what has become one of the worst years for wildfires in Colorado. More than 430,000 acres have burned so far this year, said Brian Buma, an ecology professor at the University of Colorado Denver. Typically, the state would see the arrival of mountain snowfall by October. Instead, there has been little to no precipitation in areas where the fires have burned. “It is very unusual for wildfires to start after October,” said Jennifer Balch, the director of the Earth Lab at the University of Colorado Boulder...."

In any normal year, whether one is a tourist or a Colorado resident, one would think of the small town of Silverton as a town with 7 ft. of snow on peoples lawns in February, would think of it as the last place fires could happen. Well, most of us would think that anyway.

This is not a normal year. KJCT-News 8 says that the "Ice Fire" has grown in size in just a few hours to 325 acres in the south Mineral Creek area of San Juan County. Two dozen fire fighters were sent there yesterday evening and it has seen a few water tankers and several helicopters going in and out of there. The citizens have been asked to leave but not being forced to just yet.

A nasty year in more ways than one.

The East Troublesome Fire has blown up significantly today. It's currently bearing down on Grand Lake. The entire town is being evacuated. It's so urgent that Trail Ridge Road is open through RMNP for evacuees only.

Fortunately the fire is still quite far from Grand Lake, but it is downwind, and good idea to clear the town out rather than trap the residents. It is really a tinderbox with 40+ yrs of Beetle Kill in the community. There is a lot of fuel if the fire gets to Grand Lake community. Down wind crowning can bring the fire quickly. I note several CO fires are crowning multiple tops in updrafts, Those can travel several miles in the air and drop and start another fire.

Total Personnel 295
Size 19,086 Acres
Percent of Perimeter Contained 10%
Estimated Containment Date Tuesday November 10th, 2020 approx. 12:00 AM

Cameron Pass fire has burned our previous homestead ranchland near Masonville and Drake. Lots of friends hurting and worried.

Officials just announced that the East Troublesome Fire burned 100,000 acres in under 24 hours. It was around 19,000 acres yesterday morning. It currently stands at 125,000 acres.

Im assuming these are all man made fires? There hasn't been a storm come across since early September.

Yes. All the major fires in Colorado, with the exception of the Pine Gulch Fire north of Grand Junction, were either confirmed as human-caused or still under investigation.

East Troublesome DID burn through the northern part of Grand Lake, and several homes were feared lost in Columbine Lake. A GOES satellite is showing a heat signature from East Troublesome east of the continental divide. If that's true, it's bad news. On its current path, the northeastern flank of the fire will burn through Estes Park if its trajectory does not change, and it's only 11.5 miles as the crow flies from the southern portion of the Cameron Peak fire.

Bad news. It looks increasingly likely that the East Troublesome Fire has indeed crossed the Continental Divide. Western portions of Estes Park are now under a voluntary evacuation order per the Larimer County Sheriff's Office.

Will be a really big fire if it merges with Cameron Peak Fire and becomes a 'complex'.

The ruggedness / terrain, limited resources, high winds, and regulations may make it impossible to stop or even slow within RMNP boundaries.

bad news
Cool weather coming (too late)
