ADD----Count on another 4-6 inches of snow in the high country tomorrow, was talking to a good friend who lives west of Salt Lake City and he said it's raining pretty hard, it'll be heading my way soon enough.

Wow. Statewide 202%. Folks down there in Cortez, where the snowpack is 302%, might get washed away as it all melts out....Rambler needs a boat...

I’m hoping for a long, cool spring and summer so that the solid water in the high peaks sticks around all year. That’d lessen the flooding risk as well as provide welcome water when things get hotter and drier.

But right now...yeah...the daily rain and snow is not fun. Mike, the town of Dolores is the one that would most likely flood. And Mancos. Both of them have rivers running through downtown (unlike Cortez), and there are homes fairly close to them.

Another town and a town that is most likely to be holding their breath is Henson Creek in Lake City, about 25 miles or so south of Gunnison. The guys getting the sandbags going, well, they are going to be busy--real busy!

Watch out for rocks falling, anywhere there are canyons or cliffs.

Yesterday several “2-story house” size boulders fell across Hwy 145 north of Dolores, literally tearing away the asphalt. Estimated road closure is 48 hrs. The boulders are too big to just be moved off the roadway! They will be drilled and blasted.

The Iron Horse Classic is also closing part of Hwy 550 part of today. This means two N-S major routes are closed.

Last year at this time, the snowpack in the S Platte River Basin was completely melted. This year is looking a bit different.

A note here--I'm on the road visiting friends in the Denver area--pulled off to a rest area off I-70 to post this. KOA radio has announced on the 3 p.m. news update that a huge boulder the size of a house has fallen on Colorado 145 near Dolores. Sounds like it happened late last night, didn't hear anything on the morning news in Grand Junction about it..145 doesn't get the traffic that Red Mountain Pass gets but it's pretty scenic in its own right. For sure C-Dot has road closure signs out, most likely at Rico to the north and of course Dolores to the south. Just picking this up, they have not said how close it is to Dolores but I've been on that road dozens of times in the last several decades. I'm thinking it's 15 miles north of Dolores, maybe a little further.

For sure people have just two choices if you're near Durango up and over Red Mountain Pass. For Cortez it will be U.S. 491 to Dove Creek, then right to IIRC state highway 141 down Slick Rock Hill to Naturita and continue on 141 to Grand Junction.

Maybe some of the SW posters can fill in some details. Colorado Rambler--Durango Joe--Parfleche!! Whatcha got on this? The report said the hole is several feet deep and it's the size of a house. Hopefully one of you folks can fill in the details, I'm posting this on my nephews smart phone (actually he is, I'm just rambling!)

Nasty situation to say the least. You don't hear a lot about rockslides near Dolores, but yep, they got "em!!

The rock slide happened at about 4 pm Friday afternoon, not late at night. Local papers published the story right away; Denver only did so today.

If you’ve been on that road, the possibility of rock slides is no surprise.
