As a side note, I have been looking constantly at this website that was linked in a thread in the Raleigh forum. I think MrBojangles posted it? It's called mapfrappe.I don't remember it being posted here, but it's pretty cool.
Basically, you can draw an outline around any building or object on a google map on one side of the page, and the outline will show you the size and scope of that building or object on the other side of the page at any location on a google map. I've used it to see how big of a space a place like Grainger Stadium or ECU's baseball stadium would need in Uptown Greenville.
I know there is a comment on the reflector site about waiting so long to "retire". The only thing I would say about that is this isn't just some regular job where she gives her 2 weeks or 4 weeks notice and they hire an immediate replacement and keep moving on. I think a new city manager should spend some time here getting to know the area before immediately jumping into the position. They take a couple of months to find someone, that person is here for 3-4 months and starts working on projects a month or so before the current manager retires. I don't have a huge problem with it, but I am assuming quite a few people do.
A ECU/City partnership for an aquatics center is a great idea. ECU could keep its current facility for practice.
ECU could provide land for it next to Stratford Arms and utilize the existing parking lots of Stratford for the facility....that would be across the street from campus, but also be a central location. The City could provide some funding for the facility and be able to use the facility. This is a model many places are using to success, Louisville's Yum Center is a perfect example of getting a great facility in the right part of town for both public and private use. PNC Arena is another example, although the location is lacking.
At some point, the City/ECU could partner for a replacement to Minges.
How about an Aquatics AND Events center placed somewhere along the 10th/Evans intersection? Basically the 4 block area between the future ECU "warehouse" district and evans street could have the aquatics center and a either a small convention/arena space or the performing arts center. Add in a pedestrian bridge across 10th street into the Dickinson Ave area...now we're cooking!

That is not a bad place either...although I think more student housing is planned for that area (as well as ECU's expansion). I was looking at the underutilized old intramural complex, with the new greenway connection and near the ECU athletics complex in my thought process. Keep in mind that a facility like this needs adequate parking ability to get in and out. I like the separation of ECU's academic/housing and athletic space, I just wish they were more connected for pedestrians because they are not far from downtown/main campus.
You could redevelop the Harris Teeter shopping center if you really wanted a good location for the facility like this...not like HT has spent a dime on it in the past 20 years. Publix is going to soon hurt their business anyway.

True, ECU's warehouse district would take up two blocks of my proposed site. However, there is a lot of land off Evans street between 10th and 14th that will eventually be re-developed around the ECU warehouse district. Surely a block or two could be developed into parking decks to help with that need. My thoughts about having it close to the 10th/Evans intersection is so that ECU parking lots nearby could be used for event parking as well as parking in the Dickinson Ave area. This increases walk-ability and would dump a few thousand people in that area before and after the events. The Harris teeter lot could be redeveloped into a mixed use with a mini-Target (already being built on Hillsborough St. in Raleigh and Franklin St. in Chapel Hill)
When I was a student many moons ago, the Natatorium was ALWAYS full. ECU Swimming & Diving, Clases for Swimming, SCUBA. Local teams using it.
A University/City pool would definitely be a good thing. Especially somewhere near ECU.
