Regarding one of Cleveland's most anticipated real estate developments in many years, two high-level sources say that Sherwin-Williams (SHW) has chosen its site for a combined headquarters plus research and development facility. That site is the 6.77-acre swath of parking lots owned by the Jacobs Group and Weston Group, just west of downtown's Public Square.

Good news. The city should offer some kind of incentive to build an iconic tower on the public square facing property. To put a 40 story glass box here would be a shame. I hate to say it, but I would prefer to wait for the chess piece instead of just a box. The city should zone it for 50+ stories minimum and figure out a way to get SHW there. It helps set the city's image.

I have to agree. As much as I am happy they are building on those parking lots, I will be disappointed if the HQ building is not iconic and at LEAST 500’ ft. Tall.

I think I'm an outlier, but I really don't think skyscrapers are all that great for a number of reasons. I think the size they are reportedly looking at is about right. I wish we still had a real sense of architecture and artistry today, but this is hardly unique to Cleveland.

There’s another Sherwin-Williams construction blog update on urban Ohio.
And here is a picture of the new lumen apartment tower at Playhouse Square. (UO had this picture from Twitter)

Default Vocon & SW headquarters

If this article is correct, the architect for the SW headquarters complex will be Vocon, a woman-owned (see Vocon history below) Cleveland architectural and design firm. If the campus is successful, Vocon could gain many commissions, also boosting the Cleveland economy.

Debbie Donley, Vocon's principal and co-founder, apparently is not an architect and is the niece of George Voinovich.

It's personally surprising that neither Vocon nor Donley have been on my radar until now.

While Vocon may be first-rate at workplace productivity design, I wonder if it has excellent exterior design chomps. Vocon's website isn't particularly encouraging in this respect.

https://www.vocon.com/projects/

SW perhaps may save megabucks by not hiring a famed architectural firm to produce an exterior design. Keep in mind that I.M. Pei delivered an iconic design for the Rock Hall, but its functionality has often been called into question. If the new SW campus shelters a highly productive, 21st century corporation, Cleveland will be a winner.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vocon

Vocon has been associated with the now very troubled WeWork. This may pose some difficulties for Vocon ahead.

https://www.crainscleveland.com/arti...-debbie-donley

Steven Litt, Cleveland.com's acclaimed architecture critic, long has championed Cleveland architects and lamented the hiring of non-Cleveland architects for major projects in the region. It will be interesting to read his reactions to Vocon designs if this project proceeds as reported.

<<That process is well underway for SHW and its architect Vocon Partners LLC which is designing the coatings giant's new global HQ+R&D facilities downtown.>>

Default Outlet Shoppes

Isn't this the location for the proposed intermodal transportation center, or would the center be built adjacent to this outlet mall, essentially wiping out the Muny parking lot? An NYC-like Port Authority building would require a substantial footprint.

NEOtrans: The Outlet Shoppes of Cleveland is back in stock again

https://www.cleveland.com/metro/2015...it_center.html

If this outlet mall project goes through, and the developers were smart, they would subsidize a trolley route from downtown to this mall. Such a trolley could travel throughout downtown picking up shoppers. Ditto, perhaps, with a LakeTran route that includes the mall.
