We are seeing some really nice TOD developing in a few areas (the Van Aken District, UC Uptown/Little Italy, and potentially W.25-Ohio City and Flats East Bank (Phase III)...

But this is going to be a challenge, esp given the way RTA has been mismanaged for so many years, reflected in the woeful condition of the few cars left on both our Rapid systems and, also, because Ohio voters (foolishly) reelected regressive, backward-looking Republicans who strongly contributed to this mess (anti-rail/transit/passenger railroad, pro-highway, sprawl, pro-rural, anti-urban, etc., etc., etc., ...).
I thought I read something not long ago indicating new trains were on the way...

Enjoyed this interview on PC mag with notable Cleveland boomerang George Hahn. Particularly intrigued by his comments regarding Cleveland's "next chapter".

I'm sure this is not the case otherwise it would be a major news story... I now on another city blog there was some speculation about the potential specs for new trains: that is, they're considering a small order of HRTs and LRTs, separate, like they are now, but some are unhappy, thinking that a universal car should be developed; one with high-and-low platform access so cars can traverse the entire system. However, apparently, in order to do so, the Red Line/HRT platforms would have to be lengthened because high platform LRTs are narrower and -- at least right now -- RTA is balking at the time and expense needed to retrofit the 18 Red Line stations... That's the latest I've heard.

... here you go:

Cleveland RTA–ready to repeat rail mistakes of the past? | All Aboard Ohio - Advocacy group for Transportation Choices in Ohio.

... clarification: apparently RTA isn't doing anything at all toward preparing specs for new cars for another 7-10 years despite deterioration/safety concerns from the fleet workers at the central rail facility @ E. 55th Street (who are most expert on the subject)... In short, RTA incompetence reigns supreme!!

Honestly it's surprising that Cleveland has even managed to hold on to rail service for all these years.

All of this stuff is secondary to service frequency. A useful transit system doesn't have the huge service intervals that too many routes in RTA do.
