There was nothing the mayor could have done to change the profitability of the airport, just like there's nothing a mayor can do to prevent jobs from going overseas because of lower wages. What a mayor can do is position a city to be attractive to businesses, and residents by maintaining sound finances, good city services, quality schools, and navigable city permits and laws. Jackson has done and/or is working on improving all of those things.
What a mayor can also do is develop immigration to a city and region.

Remember Jackson stating that he wanted to focus on the current citizens of Cleveland and not on immigrants? Having an immigrant base also helps develop air service as well as jobs and overall economic growth.

Detroit is trying a program to grant 50,000 VISAs to immigrants with college degrees; Philly has tapped into the immigrant growth as well. Cleveland's Mayor? Not interested.

this is a good insightful post. what happened to all those "welcome" centers I saw on the news? Cleveland is experiencing growth from foreign born residents in some ways. ie- Ukrainians, Asian, arab, etc.. but couldn't Cleveland do more ? lets offer educated/skilled/legal immigrants free airfare to Cleveland. paid with city budget. better yet, Cleveland can start a new airline , its name "immigrant airline". one boeing 757 circling the globe as it picks up new foreign-born Cleveland residents. it would be the first of its kind. . it would be a overnight sensation . just think of all those good food joints that will open !

How did I miss that news? That's pretty cool.

Can we try to keep debate about politics and politicians out of this thread and just stick to what the thread was intended for?

I heay ya but so much of Cleveland's development gets tied into the nit-wit pols it tough not to digress; I will refrain (or seriously try to!)
