Well, I don't know if it was every the largest city, but today its the largest city in the Americas with around 11 Million people in its city limits. That's the largest at least in the Americas.

As far as physical size, imagine a city the geographic size of Houston with the population density of San Francisco. That is SP.

I'm glad to report that growth in SP, due to economic prosperity spreading all over the country, has slowed-and now the city is growing much more healthy then it was in previous decades.

I think nearly 30 million live in it's Greater metro area, dwarfing any city in the US.
Brazil has very strict Metro Area standards and currently the Metro SP Area has 20 Million people in 3,000 sq miles.(6,600 per sq mile)

If Brazil used US Standards, the "MSA" would have 25-27 Million people.

In any event, traffic has become a very major issue all over the area-it always was, as far as I can remember, but now it seems to be really bad.

And the accidents! pfft. Don't even get me started on those.

In Los Angeles it has to be the San Diego Freeway\ 405 especially near the airport. Also the Santa Monica Freeway\ 10 is murder during rush hour. But Interstate 5 is also very busy most of the time.

And they are never really busy. They are pure treats when compared to the mess in NY/LI, LA/OC

The busiest freeway section my state is I-5 through downtown Seattle, but the multiple lanes typically handle that freeway fairly well. It's only a nightmare if there's an accident, or stalled vehicle, or something. But the most congested, slowest freeway is I-405 at three separate points. At the South end where it interchanges with Highway 167 (the Valley Freeway), which is just about a mile East from 405's Southern terminus with I-5 and a little South of the dreaded s-curves. Then when 405 and I-90 interchange. And last is the Northern part in Bothell.

^Yeah they really need to widen 290 to 59 standards. Long overdue.

In Florida, it has to be I-95 from Miami to West Palm Beach.

In Minnesota (Minneapolis/St. Paul) I-494 on the south end between Cedar Ave and Hwy 212 is frequently congested for more than 8 hours a day on the week days, and several hours a day on the weekends as well. Rarely, if ever, is there no traffic on that stretch for any given day.

hmm Florida would be between I-95 and Palmetto. So to simplify:

I-95 for Florida
Palmetto for Miami
