Among large cities, here are my current thoughts:

1. NYC
2. Chicago
3. San Francisco
4-6: Philly, Boston, DC
7. Seattle
8. LA

After that it gets tough. Sometimes I want a more compact, entertaining downtown, sometimes I want more comprehensive offerings, even if they are more spread out. This order could change a good bit depending on exactly what you are in the mood for.

9. Baltimore
10. New Orleans
11. Miami (including South Beach which is technically a different city)
12. Portland
13. Minneapolis
14. Honolulu
15. San Diego
16. Pittsburgh
17. Denver
18. Atlanta
19. St. Louis
20. Cleveland
21. Milwaukee
22. Houston
23. San Antonio
24. Detroit
25. Dallas
26. Austin
27. Nashville
28. Tampa/St. Pete

I have been to 18 of these cities (including all but one of my top six, and nine of my top 11), so I could certainly be wrong on some of the ones I haven't been to. In all honesty, I'd like to check all of these out if I could at some point.

Every time I look at this I want to change something, but this is going to be my prelim. final.
Excellent List.

One question tho, for Las Vegas are you ranking the actual downtown LV or are you including the strip in Paradise as Downtown. I like the old original Downtown, but the strip in Paradise is where all the fun is at.

EDIT: opps just saw someone already asked

So you think Chicago is further above Philly than Philly would be to Houston?

I think you have Pittsburgh and Baltimore too low, to me may be top 10 DTs

Also DC seems high unless this is based on office sq footage and I find Atlanta's DT personally better than Houston

LV just doesnt belong, the strip isnt a real DT

^^ so you are saying Philly should be number one?

leave the guy's ranking alone. Its his choice. His brain might not be clouded by whatever it is in yours that make you make silly choices

DC is high because it has more variety and attractions than any other DT outside of NYC! From seeing a Soviet ICBM to tracing your ancestors back to the old country to sitting in on a Supreme Court ruling, there is more to do and see.

Not sure I totally agree; Chicago, Boston, SF, Philly all offer a ton as well. DC does have a lot but wouldnt say more honestly. The best thing about DC is many attractions are free (well another thing funded by the American tax payer)

And even many of things you reference can be done in multiple cities actually (or materially similar things)

He still left out Portland and LA (and probably others I don't notice). That's why I stay away from making these giant lists. I will always forget at least one city.
