New York is easily #1 IMO, but I think SF's is way better than DC's by a long shot. Chicago, Philly and Boston I haven't been to so I can't comment accurately there, but I would think they all are among the top.

I didn't say it was.

What do you mean downtown DC has no neighborhoods?
I didn't say that.

If your saying all of DC has no interesting neighborhoods, then your crazy.
I didn't say that either.

It's about as urban as you can get. DC has plenty of shopping areas, but it's not downtown.
We're talking about downtowns ("Top 25 downtowns in the U.S.").

are you guys serious. NY #1,Chicago #2,Philly #3. Come on how are people ranking Washington dc, which has no skyline at all above philly . Philly's downtown is by far better than San Fran and anywhere else in the country except NY and the Chi.

Since it isn't a skyline contest, D.C. is contender like the rest of them.

DC has a downtown better than most cities but that's not really the best part of town IMO. Dc's downtown alone doesn't compete with NY, Chicago, Philly, SF, Boston. After that it would be a fair comparison.

I am confused! What's the criteria? Vibrancy, activities, etc... If it is then, NYC's DT would be next to last because it is very dead after dark. I think you people are confusing Midtown with DT. DC has way more activities than SF, Philly......

I think downtown should be like the area thats the center/main part of the city, in NYCs case its everything from Midtown(59th Street) to Battery Park.

^^ yup exactly. on that map, i would consider anything south of 23rd street downtown. not just the financial district.

I agree. And same with SF's or any other city's Financial District. Are there ANY cities where the Financial District is the center of activity after dark?

Downtown NYC IMO fits your description of south of 23rd. Downtown SF is anything within the confines of Van Ness, Broadway, The Embarcadero, and Division/King/Berry.

Yeah, my buddy used to live by the Fulton Nasseau stop in Manhattan and it was dead at night.

Boston's downtown is quiet at night (unless you consider Chinatown/Theatre District, Boylston St, or Fanueil Hall downtown - there's always stuff going on there) but that was supposed to be alleviated with the resurgance of Downtown Crossing - which stopped to a grinding halt when the economy collapsed. We have about 5 high rises on hold in a mile and a half radius.....
