Philly is still below its 2020 post-pandemic homicides and shooting totals YTD—safest year since 2019.

Let's see if it receives the credit it deserves (unlikely)

Baltimore is 158 (151*). Two over the weekend. So far 19 (18*) for the whole July which is definitely good for Baltimore standard.

DC is really trying hard catching up to B'more, aren't they...

Miami has enjoyed extremely low homicide rates and gun violence in the last few years, and it is dropping even further in 2023, according to the Herald.

The reduction in crime comes even as Miami’s population is surging, making the drop even bigger on a per capita basis.

From the beginning of the year through early March 2023, there have been just four homicides and ten people shot in the entire city, the report said.

In the past two years, there have been 97 combined homicides – less than 50 per year each year, and the lowest since 1964.

One big difference from 1964 – Miami has at least 100,000 more residents now than it did then, making the per-capita drop much more significant.

The Herald noted that in the 1980s, there were nearly 300 annual homicides in the city.
That article is a bit misleading, there was an undercount. There were 5 in January alone, 11 from Jan to April I think. Jan 1 to June 30th had 25. Right now it's on pace to finish around 50, which has been in line for the past few years. It's always good news seeing any city seeing a decrease in crime.

Prior to the pandemic NYC hadn't seen 400 homicides since 2012. And it won't see that many this year.

You cant use Pandemic number as anything realistic. So maybe we can cede you 2022? But you cant in any seriousness go back 11 years and start talking lol.

• A 16 y/o boy is killed Saturday in the Churchland area of Portsmouth, middle of the day. Puts them at 25 for the year.

• A 61 y/o man was killed in the Wythe area of Hampton Saturday as well, also in the middle of the day. Puts them at 25 as well. Both Portsmouth and Hampton are relentless, their most violent period ever and doesn't look to be slowing down. Portsmouth is Portsmouth, but Hampton having the exact same rate as Richmond right now is unheard of.

This is also Hampton's third time in recorded history to reach 25 murders, with the last time being 2021 and then 1975. Done so in 7 months...

• Someone was shot and killed in a shooting on the interstate in Chesapeake this morning which makes 6 for the year, a huge decrease from 15 atp last year.

This comes not long after a report saying HR has had a total of 18 interstate shootings just this year alone (now 19), with 7 of those happening in Hampton which is ridiculous. To put in perspective, I saw a recent article that there has been 22 interstate shootings in the Bay Area as of July 26th. Mind you, Bay Area has 6 million more people...

But then you see reports like Memphis where they've recorded upward of 55 interstate shootings as of May, it ends up looking very tame...

Roanoke VA has 21 homicides so far this year. 21. It is only the beginning of August. That is really bad. Pre 2020, we typically had 14-16 in an entire year, in a bad year.
