Prime CBD/downtown urban shopping, on foot? is probably in concentrated in NYC and Chicagi by far, followed by Miami, Boston, SF and to a lesser extent DC Philly and LA .

Beverly Hills, river oaks district, Buckhead, how do we categorize these, urban, suburban, or something in between

These places are designed to mimic the East Coast style of CBD shopping while having suburban access such as parking available

A little photo tribute to downtown shopping...I took old this pic of the sidewalk of Market Street in San Francisco right in front the entrance of the building that houses Bloomingdale's, right next to Nordstrom. It was a typical saturday. #sad #ihatecovid

Beverly Hills is not mimicking anything. It has always had a traditional downtown layout.

Yeah do people think there is no parking in like Waltham, Mass or Norristown PA?

It really doesn’t though. Yes Beverly Hills is urban, but it’s not the traditional 5th Ave/Magnificent Mile. Doesn’t make it any worse but for the purpose of what was described. Heck some people even like it more. But it’s a whole different catergory.

The weird thing, was that the mall that's now American Dream was planned in some form on that site since the 1960s or 1970s. And it's absurd how many delays there have been, on building out that mall over the decades. First it was called Meadowland Mills(and I'd argue debt from the Meadowland Mills project was a huge factor in leading Mills into bankruptcy, only later to be bought out by Simon), Xanadu(project was briefly renamed to this), and finally American Dream. Also, there are a lot of questions whether long term that debt Triple Five (current owner of American Dream, they put Mall of America up as collateral to finance costs for AD I think) incurred for building American Dream, will lead them into bankruptcy just like it did with Mills. Search Ace's Adventures YouTube video on American Dream, and that video explains the issues and history with that mall very well.

I do have to say from what I've read about American Dream that I have my doubts that mall will succeed long term, but who knows? And like others said, none of the other higher end department stores (i.e. Nordstorm, Von Maur, Neiman Marcus, Saks, etc) have signed onto there as an anchor. Like others can sense, it was built more like a typical Mills mall, than it was a high end mall. And like others have said, there already are other high end shopping centers in NY/NJ that serve high end retail better. Even King of Prussia has more of those retailers, than American Dream.

Chicago is not 'by far' ahead of SF in this regard-in fact, SF is more compact with 500+ stores within blocks of each other in downtown.'

This was from a thread on this topic like 10 years ago...I looked up stores in DT SF at that time and came up with this:

Restaurants:
In my research, I've discovered that there are at least 1,000 eateries and restaurants in Downtown. Its too exhaustive to go through Google Maps street view.

Anyway, one of the recent additions is hip budget Japanese retailer Uniqlo. I think they also have a location(s) in NYC. Here's a pic of their SF pop-up store on Post. Their new store is on Powell.
Uniqlo was new back then LOL

These are just the stores I found---there are many I didnt but this is most Im sure. Obviously retail is volatile and there are always changes, so this is out of date, but it's not that much different.
