Wow. Canada is a tough market.
I remember when Target (obviously not high end) ended its plans for Canada.

It seems that this department store chain founded in Canada in 1837 owns the high-end market in our neighbor to the north.

(To clue you in on who the store thinks is its primary customer, the landing page defaults to women's clothing and accessories.)

I believe that Nordstrom and Target attempted to penetrate markets that are well served by local Canadian retailers (in their respective segments) that have a better sense and understanding of their consumer’s tastes and preferences.

Admittedly, I’m not as knowledgeable about high end brands as others posting in this thread. However, from extensive shopping experience in Toronto and more limited in Montreal, the Canadian department stores and specialty retailers regardless of segment, seem to offer a bit more of an international sense/ flair of style of clothing in addition to what is found in the U.S. which tends to lean more conservative in comparison.

The Nordstrom Canada numbers must have been bad. Really bad especially given they are closing Nordstrom Rack which is their bread and butter these days.
Nordstrom has always been a funny store to me. I don't consider it a luxury dept store in the general sense but its certainly a high-end store. But I am also biased/from the Northeast and Nordstrom didn't enter my market until the 90s. When it came people were so excited and I remember my mother (an avid shopper) being unimpressed.

It's often put on the same level with Bloomingdale's but I feel like Bloomimgdale's best stores beat Nordstrom by a mile whereas a bad local Bloomingdale's will be inferior to a Nordstrom in the same shopping center.
