Well, point being is that to many Americans, almost any other state is already better than California. Adding two other states to another state wouldn't change that fact.

Actually California would still be the preferred state of choice to live in over NY, NJ and PA according to polls as well.
So like I said, when you are as big and have the widely known image that CA has, you will have haters and lovers.
Furthermore Ive read a few laughable posts in this thread which claimed that Pennsylvania actually IS "better" than California already, but not surprisingly there is no explanation as to how that is even possible?

True. I guess it elicits the strongest feelings on both ends.

Maybe its because they've lived in Pennsylvania their whole life and enjoy it? It's all opinion anyways. "Better" is subjective.

States are less significant on the East Coast in many ways (people more affiliate with their metro) plus CA is vastly larger and larger population. CA is also iconic in many ways; the Cali lifestyle, hollywood etc and am sure this aspect plasy in the international perception. NYC is far more iconic than NY state.
NJ being the lowest rated in your poll is quite surprising seeing as it is the wealthiest and most educated. Not sure the residents would agree but perception is what it is. I personally love CA; an awesome state as are NJ, PA, and NY. Have no issues with either and preference is all subjective.
On your other comment of PA; well many people love PA and choose to live there. Like CA it has many great aspects and many not so great; the rest is all personal preference.
On an area where PA is better; one simple one is history as you said there none, there is a clear cut difference; to argue this point (which you may) is probably as silly as saying the PA beaches are better etc.

Same here really.
As far as West Virginia, it's not much different from where I grew up in upstate New York. Same beautiful scenery, same kinda folks, just different accents. lol
As far as Jersey I'd never live there, but the shore is gorgeous and so is northwest Jersey. The Pine Barrens fascinate me as well.
