DC's at 75 for the year. On pace for 119, which would be a 20% decline from 2009 levels and the lowest in the city since the middle part of the 20th century.

I posted this table on SSP. The data isn't recent, but it does provide a snapshot of where many large cities stood for the first three months of the year. I will try to update this information.

Also, the FBI released prelim crime data for 2010 (Homicide included) http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ucr/crime-in-the-u.s/2010/preliminary-annual-ucr-jan-dec-2010[/URL]

According to the FBI stats murder declined by 4.4% from 2009 meaning there were ~14,571 homicides in the U.S. in 2010. Using the U.S. census bureau 2010 population of 308,745,538, the 2010 homicide rate would be 4.72 per 100,000. This would be the lowest number of murders in the United States since 1968 (13,800) and the lowest homicide rate since 1963 (4.6).

The safest city in the nation is Irvine,California (Population 217,193; 0 murders). Not sure what the murder capital of America will be this year but the rates for the usual suspects are; New Orleans (49.11); Flint, MI (48.51); Detroit (34.47); St Louis (40.55); and Washington D.C. (21.94)

To a DC'er thats excellent unfortunately on a grand scale still probably one of the highest for cities over 500,000

Wow. 42 for a city of 100,000 seems pretty crazy. My home state has 3,000,000 people and only had 34 murders for the entire year of 2010.
